While searching gatherer for an instant or sorcery that could win the game for my Dynavolt Tower deck, I came across Rise from the Tides. As soon as I picked my jaw up off the floor, I realized it could be flashed in at instant speed with Brain in a Jar. At this point I went into convulsions.
Here are blowouts enabled by THE BRAIN in the current standard:
-Opponent casts Archangel Avacyn. We respond to the etb trigger with an instant-speed Fumigate. This kills all their creatures INCLUDING Avacyn.
-Opponent attacks. We flash in Confiscation Coup. This leads to a 3 for 1, as we get to 1. Gain the opponent's best creature 2. Remove the opponent's best creature 3. Kill the opponent's second-best creature by blocking with the best creature.
-Of course, the classic "cast Rise from the Tides and make 15 zombies at the opponent's end step, and then attack and win on my turn." Oh, they had a counterspell? Well, unfortunately for them, all our mana but one is untapped, and so we get to counter back. I don't think Torrential Gearhulk can claim that!
I'm not going to lie, this is a budget deck for fans of jank, but Rise from the Tides truly does go over the top of EVERYTHING in the current Standard, if you can find a deck to put it in. The two obvious choices for me are blue-red and blue-white, but I'm keeping the deck monocolored for the time being to save money on lands. After testing for a while I hope to see what second color would be most useful.
