Breya, Etherium Captain

Commander / EDH

Zuty

A'hoy landlubber, it's time to set sail and plunder some booty!

Etherium Captain Breya navigates the stellar seas aboard her treasured flag ship, the 'Black Lotus'. With her loyal crew in tow, they plunder the multiverse of the most valuable treasures and keel-haul anyone who gets in their way.

Main Cast

  • Breya, Etherium Shaper. Undisputed leader of the crew. After the conflux occured, she built the 'Black Lotus' and left Alara behind to become a pirate. Adventuring from plane to plane, she has been slowly amassing a crew of devoted followers as well as plenty of treasure along the way.

  • Admiral Beckett Brass. The crews second in command; keeps the rest of the crew in line. Her years of experience may far exceed Breya's, but her tutelage to the young captain have been invaluable.

  • Captain Lannery Storm. A spitfire with a fierce sense of loyalty; she'd follow Breya to Hell and back if it meant adventure and treasure awaited them.

  • Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer. The money behind this opperation and a silver-tongued negotiator. Also, an avid collector of one-of-a-kind items.

  • Hanna, Ship's Navigator. The brains of the operation; her knowledge of artifacts is immeasurable. She plots the course the next piece of treasure that's just begging to be plundered.

  • Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer. Chief mechanic of the 'Black Lotus' who keeps it in pristine condition. He also dabbles in building smaller ships which the crew utilize; Smuggler's Copter being a personal favorite of his.

  • Baleful Strix. AKA. Polly, this mechanical owl was rescued back on Esper right after she hatched by Breya. Since then, she views Breya as her mother and has never left her side.

  • Hellkite Tyrant. AKA. Avarice, this exotic "pet" exudes all the greed and ferocity of any pirate worth their salt. Just don't end up on Breya's bad side or you'll end up as dinner for it.

  • Broodstar. 'The White Whale' and reason for Breya taking up a pirates life in the first place. She's been chasing this treasure leviathan from plane to plane since she first discovered it on Esper before the conflux.

What Even is This?!

I've been a huge fan of EDH and have built and played with dozens of decks, but none felt more "right" than the preconstructed Breya deck. I slowly began modifying the deck and realized how insanely powerful it could become; but I tried to avoid that, since I much prefer having a fun match instead of comboing for infinite everything. And even though my deck wasn't anything like that, just mentioning Breya to other players was met with groans of disappointment. So I decided to change that and, with the arrival of Ixalan, pirates seemed to be the best answer.

The backstory above is just me making sense of it all. I didn't want to just do a tribal pirate deck with blink effects and artifacts to abuse Breya's ETB trigger; each card had to make sense in this story I had created. Etherium Sculptor and Myr Battlesphere are both great, but neither one really fits on a pirate ship. I had to piece together a crew that made sense. Hellkite Tyrant might seem out of place, but if you think about it, dragons are basically pirates. They both love gold, they both hoard treasure, and they both cause lots of havoc in order to get more. Broodstar might also seem like a bit of a stretch, but it really does look like a giant whale. I imagine it swimming through the liquid metals seas of Mirrodin destroying ships to collect more goodies so that it can grow.

This will be a constant work in progress and, who knows, I might decide to pick my pen back up and write some short little tales about the crew and their adventures. But, in the mean time, I'd like to know what you think of this concept. Is there anything I'm missing that would thematically make sense? Please comment below and thanks for reading this drivel.
