Bring out your dead! (Scarab God EDH)

Commander / EDH Tokens UB (Dimir) Zombie

"Seasons don't fear the reaper, nor do the wind, the summer or the rain." - Blue Öyster Cult, from "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," Agents of Fortune (1976)

Goal: Uniting a zombie force together to wipe out enemies using your commander's abilities and graveyard manipulation of your and your opponents' decks.

Key Strategies:

  • Do you come from a land down under?: Simply put, the more zombies you have, the better. This deck gives you multiple methods to cast zombies that boost other zombies you control up, especially with creatures such as Lord of the Accursed, Death Baron, Diregraf Captain, and Undead Warchief. Zombie tokens are also super beneficial to this deck's functions, so spells like Army of the Damned, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Josu Vess, Lich Knight with the kicker ability, and Ghoulcaller Gisa will help you get a bunch of 2/2 Zombies fast, overwhelming your opponents, building your board quickly, and moving the game in your favor with The Scarab God's first ability.

  • Exit light, enter night: Speaking of, the key strategy for winning with this deck is with the commander: The Scarab God. Although the deck can mostly function without it, the creature is a vastly important tool for victory. Its first ability is extremely powerful with hitting your opponents life total hard and scrying a bunch each of your turns. Paradox Haze allows this ability to be even stronger by adding a second upkeep. The second ability to reap for creatures from your opponents' graveyards makes the deck very malleable as well. One thing to watch out for when casting the commander is that once it enters the battlefield, it will surely become a target for removal. While its recursion from the graveyard helps with recasting from your hand, the commander still needs to be cast with caution. Swiftfoot Boots helps with giving it hexproof, but still plan on when the best time to play it is and when you can take an advantage in the game with the god by your side.

  • If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear!: As briefly mentioned before, another big factor in the deck is graveyard manipulation and recursion. Cards such as Altar of the Brood and Altar of Dementia can get cards into graveyards very quickly, and the recursion is where things get fun. Of course, you have The Scarab God's second ability to exile any creature from any graveyard and create a 4/4 Zombie token that's a copy of it, but then there are spells like Animate Dead and Extract from Darkness that can also get creatures from opponents' graveyards under your control. The Stitcher Geralf and Ghoulcaller Gisa zombie token generation combo also works very well with this strategy. Do you want to mill yourself? Go for it! Cards like Gisa and Geralf, Cemetery Recruitment, and Corpse Churn allow you to cast creature cards or return them to your hand (mostly Zombie, but that's mist of the creatures in the deck). Either way to play will work, and the choice is yours!

(Note: There are definitely more proficient cards out there that can be added to the deck, but I wanted to keep prices on the lower end and I wasn't trying to break the bank when selecting cards)

Any suggestions are appreciated!
