What better way to cultivate pure simmering hatred in your opponent than to turbo-fog your way to victory with a wincon that that not only refuses to interact with them, but is also the most obnoxious foil mythic printed.

That's right, the maze is back and it's flipping the bird to stompies everywhere.

One of my favourite cards in standard at the moment is Maze's End - it's flavourful, helped in creating narrative closure to the Ravnica block canon, and is an all-round groin-kicker for opponents to have to deal with. And delighted I was to see it burst its way into the standard spotlight in Pro Tour Dragon's Maze and, more recently, GP Vancouver this year.

For this description, I won't go into detail about every card choice, as it's mostly just stock standard Maze-turbo-fog. However I will outline my decision making on some of the other cards that make an appearance in this delightfully satisfying experiment in pacifism.

Jace, Architect of Thought - Jace AoT is a 4 drop card draw fusion core. He is almost exclusively used as a -2 as his +1 is generally redundant due to foggy weather.

Prophet of Kruphix - The Prophet is still trying to prove her worth in the deck. The mana-cost is unfortunately high when you want to be returning Maze's End on the same turn, however the ability to untap all that mana on their turn means you can Merciless Eviction on turn 7 and not worry about flash creatures surprising you with damage on the next turn.

Courser of Kruphix - I like big butts and I cannot lie. And the courser is extremely well endowed. That 4 butt hoses aggro and weenies, whilst thinning out the deck of those ever important Gates, allowing you to safely store unplayed Gates in hand for a surprise win 1 turn quicker. Also the life gain isn't half bad. Butts.

There are 4 Merciless Eviction in here until I get 2 more Supreme Verdict . Supreme Pizza Verdict just takes the cake in boardwipes and being stuck with 3 Merciless Eviction in hand is inefficient, demoralising and downright un-Australian.

First test at FNM this week and went 3-1. Very happy with the result.

Round 1 vs Gruul monsters (2/0): This round was a fairly convincing win. Game 1 got Maze's End out on turn 4, and just tutored gates and turbo fogged to victory. He did get Xenagos, the Reveler out which can be quite disrupting to the game plan of Mazing, however it was a little bit too late and the tokens were fairly easy to deal with as I tutored my final 3 or so lands. Game 2 went very similar to the first. Got a high value Supreme Verdict which made the guy cringe. I had to apologise for how boring the game was - he was noticeably upset.

Round 2 vs Orzhov Midrange (2/1): This one was interesting. Game 1 was a washout. He did almost no damage to me and i got almost perfect draws for tutoring gates. Game 2 was not as fun. I did not see an Obzedat, Ghost Council in Game 1, and so did not expect it until it dropped game 2. He just flickered his way to victory. Game 3; boarded in blind obedience to stop Obzedat swinging big, and managed to reduce him to a negligible flicker damage as it didn't come out until around turn 8. Ran the Maze and came out on top.

Round 3 vs Mono-Red Devotion (1/2): Karma had to come and bite me in the angus for playing such a slow, stally deck by putting me up against the one deck that is almost unbeatable with Maze's. Game 1 he gets almost the perfect hand of Ash Zealot, Boros Reckoner, Burning-Tree Emissary and others. I on the other hand had to mull to 5. I Scoop turn 3. Game 2 was intense. He had a slower start (relative to rdw: if you can really call 3 creatures swinging on turn 3 slow...) Managed to fog my way into two Crackling Perimeter and tapped for perfect damage on turn 5. Game 3 I had two lands the whole game. Fogged as much as I could but was really just delaying the inevitable. Happy to have taken a game off the un-winnable matchup though.

Round 4 vs Selesnya Populate (2/0): Game 1 was so close I may have developed a heart murmur. He played the usual Voice of Resurgence, Advent of the Wurm package, populating for days and massing up enormous voice tokens. I fogged all day 'erry day until I had none left, at which point he could have easily swung for about 60-70 damage... But doesn't. He swings for just 16 when I am on 14 life and I can block 3 with Courser of Kruphix. Down to one life. Holy crap... I did have a Supreme Verdict in hand though. Board wiped, managed to stabilise and at this point he was in top-deck mode. Tutored the remaining lands and won via Maze's End. Game 2 was much easier. He missed some crucial early land drops. I Detention Sphere his early Voice and can just stave off the damage he was dealing with fogs until a relatively quick Maze finish.

Overall very please with how it turned out. Don't know if i will bring it again to FNM for a while due to the amount of sheet discomfort it brought to my opponents. But it was fun nonetheless... Aaaaand my prize pool of boosters included an Ephara, God of the Polis so VICTORY!!!
