PUZZLE UPDATE: I made a complementary series of simple puzzles to help teach combat basics to beginners, featuring the cards from the green and red beginner teaching decks. View the PDF I shared on Google drive here: link

Magic 101

This series of casual decks is designed to teach Magic to new players in the best way possible. Each color deck is a "real" constructed deck: the card choices are very deliberate and work together to highlight a play style typical for that color. The new player is meant to start with the and decks. As they learn the game mechanics, they then progress to play the other colors, which increase a little in complexity. A LOT of work has gone into balancing the decks, so that any one of them is an interesting match-up against the others.

Because this is meant to try to "capture" new players and sell them on the game, there is a focus on good art and low prices. Each deck is meant to work as a cohesive unit, so the new player is indirectly exposed to deck brewing concepts. The card text is kept as simple as possible, so the new player can focus on learning the game.

Credit goes to massivecreature. His approach and his red and green decks on reddit link served to guide the rest of this project.

This deck: style and choices

In this deck the goal is to introduce equipment and multicolored decks. In a multicolored deck, the benefits of a colorless casting cost become more apparent to the new player. A Voltron style deck is often popular with new players, and seemed a good way to highlight equipment. The inefficiency of the equipment approach helps temper the power of this deck to better match the others in the set. For the same reason, pump spells (e.g. Larger Than Life ) are excluded to keep the deck in control. The deck plays differently from game to game, sometimes going wide because of synergy between infect and Nest of Scarabs and Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons . Other times the player will sneak in infect damage without ever having much board control.

The Vector Asp is a little inferior to the Glistener Elf , and I like the elf artwork better, but it's price is prohibitive for the small difference. I included Golgari Rot Farm but it is arguably a little more complicated than Evolving Wilds for example; thematically however it fits well with this deck and is kept for that reason. Scarscale Ritual would be powerful in this deck, and I like how a downside of a card gets changed to an upside because of synergy, but the blue color is out of place. Whispering Specter is an interesting card, but is a little too complicated for this already complicated deck.

The price of many of the infect related cards in the original version of this deck went up prohibitively. I made the following changes: Grafted Exoskeleton replaced by Phyresis , Whispersilk Cloak replaced by Fireshrieker , and Contagion Clasp replaced by Channeler Initiate .
