Cash-Strapped Black Racks

Modern 8-Rack Discard Mono-Black

YesterdaysGhost

Sideboard

This has been my evolving take on 8-Rack. Speed and low CMC is the key here, seeking to punish straight out the gates and not let up. Generally by turn 3 or 4 opponents start to consider if they should even be casting anything or playing lands to try and get around the whole Rack/Shrieking Affliction issue, but that's why I use Liliana's Caress. Liliana's Caress aims to capitalise the opponent damage from discards and then Waste Not gives some extra board presence as well as ramping our spell casting (namely discard effects).

A bit of a Rat archetype going on as well, Burglar (formerly Ravenous) helping further discards and Pack Rat capitalising on Rats being the only creatures in the main board.

Sideboard is really all about adaptive play as necessary. Either going for more board presence or adding in more removal/control options. The flex slots in the mainboard are Liliana of the Veil, both Liliana's Caress, Waste Not and up to two Swamps allowing for 6 sideboard changes without dramatically altering the deck's fast-paced capabilities.

Updates Add

Decided to attend my first MtG tournament in 10 years yesterday, alongside my son, and jumped in with this deck.

Ended up paired against some interesting decks; a Grist, the Hunger Tide Self Mill, Dimir Mill, Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd Flicker, Ruby Storm & even paired against my son's Agro Burn.

Self Mill & Ruby Storm were essentially T2-T3 instant win decks against myself without needing interaction. I did however sideboard into and it felt super satisfying using Bile Blight to remove some 20+ insect tokens against the Grist deck on their T3. Unfortunately didn't pull up my [Leyline of Sanctity] in Game 2 or 3 against either Self Mill or Ruby Storm.

Proud to have lost outright in two close games against my son as well. His first time ever playing in an MtG tournament!

I lost game 1 to Dimir Mill, their Extirpates and Surgical Extractions picking apart my deck. I would however take the round after sideboarding some removal against their Jace and get some Rack action working to great effect and also some consistent Pack Rats in both final games.

Pack Rats did solid work all through the day to be honest and I only lost to Phelia Flicker due to some land flooding, which has me again considering dropping a couple of swamps to bring in likely Leyline of Sanctity to main board and consider other options for main whilst opening up some side board slots.

1-4 at the end of the day, and taking 13th place overall. Room for improvement but just Ruby Storm the only deck I didn't feel I had a chance at all against other than a T0 Leyline.
