Sideboard


Yo yo yo! This your homeboy Tinkerman, back with another sweet deck list! I've got a pretty sweet standard deck for you that is simply dripping with value. You'll love it if you like R/U combo-storm decks, and coming for the win out of nowhere. Let's get right to it!

Alright, so the strategy is really simple with this deck, alls ya gotsta do is play Baral, Chief of Compliance on turn 2 to accelerate your mana, then play an Enigma Drake on turn three or four.

After that, it's just a matter of storming out and putting a ton of spells in your graveyard to pump up Enigma Drake. However, let's get into some more detail here so you really know what you're doing.

This deck is all about casting as many spells as possible, which means conserving mana. Baral, Chief of Compliance is your best card; even better than your finishers. If you cast good budyBaral, it's going to put you way ahead in the game. However, you might've noticed there's a huge number of 2-drops in the deck, if it comes between casting Baral or another 2-drop; cast Baral.

The next part of the deck is all about card draw, and getting your spells in the graveyard ASAP. For this there's a large suite of cards that'll do the job.

The most notable are Cathartic Reunion and Tormenting Voice. They put spells into the graveyard, and then refill your hand with even more spells to cast. I wouldn't ever recommending side-boarding these cards because they're way too powerful in this deck.

Next up we've got some removal. I know Grip of the Roil doesn't seem like it would be removal, but it's really a 2-for-1 that stalls out the opponent's best creature for a turn and draws you a card. The other mainboard card for removal is Nahiri's Wrath which is also a 2-for-1 that kills a creature or planeswalker, and then sends even more of you spells to the all important graveyard.

The final cards i'll being going over are Enigma Sphinx , Bedlam Reveler, and Geralf's Masterpiece these are your finishers for the deck, and each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Enigma Sphinx is by far your best finisher; it can grow massive with all the spells in your graveyard, and has evasion to boot. However, it's a 3-drop, which can interfere with a crucial turn of casting spells. If you do have an Enigma Sphinx on turn 3, assess your hand and see if it would be put to better use if played on turn four with maybe an Expedite.

The next card is Bedlam Reveler which is the weakest of the three, but comes with some amazing upsides. Firstly, it has prowess which can make it huge if you have one really good turn of casting spells. Beyond that, it's incredibly cheap to cast later-game, and can draw you cards and add spells to your graveyard at the same time.

The final finisher is Geralf's Masterpeice, which has some interesting dynamics in the deck. Geralf's Masterpiece is incredibly difficult to get rid of, and can survive just about anything just short of exiling it. He's also incredibly focused on the discard plan, which encourages you to get everything out of your hand ASAP no matter what.

In this section, it's all about the sideboard and what you should and should not ever sideboard

First thing's first: Don't ever sideboard Baral, Cheif of Compliance , Cathartic Reunion, Tormenting Voice, or Nagging Thoughts . These are your key storm pieces and you'll be behind if you remove them.

Next up I want to cover Mardu Vehicles, and the trump card against them. Kozilek's Return Hits just about every creature they play at instant speed without touching our stuff; which basicaly makes it the card you should always replace Nahirir's wrath and Grip of the Roil with.

Now that i've got that out of the way, i'd like to bring up cards that you should always consider removing when sideboarding.

Geralf's Masterpiece (We have a ton of finishers and this is the worst one), Expedite (This card is an amazing 1-drop for the deck; always think hard before sideboarding this card), Grip of the Roil and/or Nahiri's Wrath (If you need better removal), and Fevered Visions (It can be slow, and is in that costly 3-drop slot),

It's failry easy to cut some cards if they're too expensive.

Just replace Spirebluff Canal with Highland Lake to start with. While I would also suggest replacing Wandering Fumarole with another R/U land, there aren't any others currently in standard, so you may have to replace it with basic lands; which could give the deck mana fixing problems.

Next, get rid of Kozilek's Return and repace it with 2 Collective Defiance and 2 Clutch of Currents . This change really should not be taken lightly though, as Kozilek's Return is incredibly good.

After that, the deck is pretty budjet, you could probably replace Fevered Visions with another cantrip, but there really isn't much reason to. Hopefully we'll get some better R/U duels in the future, but this is what we've got for now.
