Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest

Saprolings, Insects, Squirrels, Zombies, Rats, Eldrazi, lots of sac outlets, persist, and +1/+1 counters

The strategy of this deck allows it to produce a lot of tokens, use oppressive sacrifice outlets to grow it's board, and ending the game with a giant attack. This deck has been great in my meta, but it does have some true weaknesses. This deck doesn't recover very well from board wipes as most creature/token based strategies often do, but forcing repeated sacrifices on your opponents do frequently make this deck the enemy at the table. When this deck is unable to get it's token engine rolling fast it can get steamrolled, but having the option to play a very calculated forced sac game can get it out of the woods. The keys to this deck are in your mulligan choices as it wants starting hands that favor your mana ramp more then anything, with a secondary goal being developing it's token engines. Once you can get Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest out on the board you have to be able to grow him fast or shield him from the targeted removal which is and will come his way. the decks works consistently, but only with Mazirek on the field so be prepared to cast him for 9-11 in the longer games. If Mazirek goes unencumbered, then the deck can threaten to win on turn 7-9. There are a number of redundancies to the deck that make the deck very resilient to targeted removal especially key pieces. Doubling Season is obviously the king of the crop but cards like Parallel Lives, Tendershoot Dryad, and The Immortal Sun in their own ways do similar things for the decks game plan. When you add in even just 1 of the token generators like Avenger of Zendikar, , Grave Titan Hornet Queen, Mycoloth, Tendershoot Dryad, Army of the Damned, Fungal Sprouting, Saproling Migration, or Saproling Burst the decks prowess is an immediate force.

Persist Creatures Puppeteer Clique and Woodfall Primus really allow for some busted stuff with Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest. If a Persist Creature is sacrificed while Mazirek is on the field you can put the +1/+1 counter on the stack the add the Persist trigger which will resolve putting the persist creature back into play giving the persist creature a -1/-1 counter then a +1/+1 counter which cancels out allowing the persist creature to be sacrificed again and again. Combine this with one of the alters and you can get infinite mana or mill triggers whichever you choose

The power Level of this deck is 6-7.

REASONS FOR RATING:

The deck is made to make a large amount of creatures and find a way to make them large and kill in 1-2 combat steps. The deck wants to make a large board and utilize sacrifice outlets efficiently. Maz is a bit clunky to get out effectively and start making value but the Tutor package in the deck can set up and make opponents dead V fast. Mazirek, a Sacrifice outlet, and a Persist creature is GG.

the deck has medium consistency.

The deck is very weak to board wipes.

The deck rebuilds medium.

The deck draws cards medium.

Combo Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest are not the decks main wincon and the deck is not designed to get them fast or consistently. they add value and when drawn together they win.

Combo pieces Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest can be destroyed or exiled.

The pay off pieces for this deck have a high CMC.

Altar of Dementia + Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest 23 total creatures, will MIll all your opponents decks.

This spicy little number I found when trying to figure out if Altar of Dementia was a viable WINCON and not just a free sac outlet. Basically the algorithm to determine this uses whats called the GAUSS METHOD for determining linear equations.

The Gauss method was 1st used to solve for a simple but long equation. If you added all the numbers up starting from 1 to 100 in order, what is the sum? Now as you can tell, doing this at the game table isn't really what you want to do. Luckily there is a simple equation that helps make things easier.

N=X(X+1)/2

Basically, to determine the sum with our example of 100, then N=100*(100+1)/2 if you think about it like 100 x 101 / 2 =N then its becomes even easier to solve.

Now back to the combo. With Altar of Dementia + Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest every time you sacrifice a creature to altar you will mill someone for the amount of cards equal to that creatures power. When you use this method the default is to think of each creature as only a 1/1, and when it dies all the other creatures receive an additional +1/+1 counter which increases linearly. If you have 22 creatures, Altar of Dementia and Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest then you don't need to do anymore math. You WIN. Now you might be wondering what if I have a 2/2 and 5/5 and so on? If you mill for a creatures power where do all those extra cards go? Well, your right. Those bigger creatures do make this whole thing easier to pull off, but the math takes a bit longer to calculate. If you subtract 1 power from each creature that is Base larger then 1/1 and add up the total of all those creatures power together, then add that number to the number you found with GAUSS, then you have your real number. I made myself an Excel Spreadsheet to easily calculate this whole problem with the additional creature power. Its not fancy but its quick. You will Mill 276 cards from your opponents libraries, which is the maximum amount of cards you will need to mill from all total decks assuming everyone has kept a hand of cards and is now currently playing the game. Yes, this method would kill every other player on turn 1 if it were possible to make that much mana and play that many cards and creatures. With that being said your ability to win only gets easier every turn and every card drawn by your opponents. If your interested in this Combo and want my Jank Excel Doc hit me up. lol.
