Yes, I'd like to make a return please.

Mizzix has two well-known archetypes, Storm and Big Spell. This is buyback abuse, particularly with Clockspinning.

  • 9/25/2006 #1: Clockspinning can affect any kind of counter, not just a time counter. The type of counter isn’t chosen until resolution. Whether to add or remove a counter isn’t chosen until resolution.

  • 9/25/2006 #2: If the target is a permanent [as opposed to a suspended card] and it has no counter on it when Clockspinning resolves, nothing happens.

To rephrase #2, Clockspinning can be cast targeting any permanent, even if it has no counters on it.

To simplify both into one statement: Clockspinning can be cast targeting any permanent, even those without counters, and only upon resolution do you choose which counter to affect and whether to add or remove one of those counters.

Notes for Archetype

  • 714.2b “{rN}—[Effect]” means “When one or more lore counters are put onto this Saga, if the number of lore counters on it was less than N and became at least N, [effect].”

  • 714.4. If the number of lore counters on a Saga permanent is greater than or equal to its final chapter number, and it isn’t the source of a chapter ability that has triggered but not yet left the stack, that Saga’s controller sacrifices it. This state-based action doesn’t use the stack.

  • Once a chapter ability has triggered, the ability on the stack won’t be affected if the Saga gains or loses counters, or if it leaves the battlefield. (2018-04-27) ((author note, ruling seen on all Sagas not just The Mirari Conjecture))

  • If counters are removed from a Saga, the appropriate chapter abilities will trigger again when the Saga receives lore counters. Removing lore counters won’t cause a previous chapter ability to trigger. (2018-04-27) ((author note, ruling seen on all Sagas not just The Mirari Conjecture))

The Mirari Conjecture

Saga's triggered abilities are activated by the addition of one or more lore counters. Clockspinning can't say, for a Saga on 2, roll it back to 1 and activate #1. 714.4 and the latter ruling define this behavior.

A consequence of 714.4 though is that one could clockspin 2 to 3, trigger ability #3, and respond to the triggered ability with Clockspinning to set it back down to 2 lore counters. This could net you an activation of #3 without sacrificing the Saga. The first of the above two rulings clarifies that this is in fact possible.

- 702.27a Buyback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities that function while the spell is on the stack. “Buyback [cost]” means “You may pay an additional [cost] as you cast this spell” and “If the buyback cost was paid, put this spell into its owner’s hand instead of into that player’s graveyard as it resolves.” Paying a spell’s buyback cost follows the rules for paying additional costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h

  • 601.2f The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. Some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay, or may provide other alternative costs. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on. The total cost is the mana cost or alternative cost (as determined in rule 601.2b), plus all additional costs and cost increases, and minus all cost reductions. If multiple cost reductions apply, the player may apply them in any order. If the mana component of the total cost is reduced to nothing by cost reduction effects, it is considered to be {0}. It can’t be reduced to less than {0}. Once the total cost is determined, any effects that directly affect the total cost are applied. Then the resulting total cost becomes “locked in.” If effects would change the total cost after this time, they have no effect.

  • If there are additional costs to cast a spell, or if the cost to cast a spell is increased by an effect (such as the one created by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben’s ability), apply those increases before applying cost reductions. (2015-11-04) ((Mizzix of the Izmagnus))

Buyback, as an additional cost, increases the cost of the spell. Mizzix's last ability then reduces the cost to cast that spell.
