Commander / EDH Artifact Combo Competitive Primer UR (Izzet)

I feel like Tony Stark would love infinite combos, don't you?

Strengths

  • Like Oswald Fiddlebender, Iron Man, Titan of Innovation has great toolbox power and can pivot from staxing other deck's wincons to winning the game seamlessly.

  • Unlike Oswald Fiddlebender, Iron Man has access to blue and red cards, which means a proper counterspell suite and more efficient stack interaction.

  • Can play Blood Moon and Winter Moon while breaking parity, which have become stronger stax effects since the banning of Dockside Extortionist.

  • Due to the counterspell suite, the stax package can be reduced to the most efficient pieces only.

  • The deck's stax pieces can be removed easily if they're no longer effective, as they can be upgraded into game winning combo pieces with Iron Man's ability.

  • Iron Man's Birthing Pod effect is a triggered ability, so it is not turned off by Cursed Totem and Yasharn, Implacable Earth, but this is a double edged sword as it also means the deck has a harder time retriggering the effect (needs additional combat steps or trigger copies to take advantage of it multiple times in a turn).

Weaknesses

  • Null Rod hurts. Luckily, it does not turn off Iron Man, but it makes the deck way slower. Most decks get much slower with a null rod on the board though, and Iron Man can pod away useless artifacts for appropriate stax pieces instead and join the value grind game.

  • Vulnerable to Opposition Agent and Aven Mindcensor, so removal should be saved for those if opponents are running them.

  • Iron Man is a higher CMC commander at , so he is reliant on fast and/or highly interactive opening hands to be competitive against turbo decks. It helps that the infinite mana combo pieces like Basalt Monolith and Grim Monolith help power him out faster, but 5 CMC is still a big ask at higher powered tables since the banning of Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, and Dockside Extortionist.

  • Iron Man does not have any built in protection, so the pilot must use the deck's stax and interaction package to keep him safe. Haste and treasure creation on attack means that he refunds some of the cost to play him and gives him immediate value the turn he is played, which helps him get back up and running quickly even if removed from play.
