This deck is focused on evolving creatures, backed up with card draw from Fathom Mage, and Bred for the Hunt and lifegain from Horizon Chimera and Bow of Nylea.
Deck Breakdown: Creatures:
Courser of Kruphix: Fun card that can help the deck keep tempo with lands; also, plays very well with Kiora's second ability and Urban Evolution (Three lands in one turn? How's that for ahead of the curve!) Not to mention, gaining life with each land played!
Elusive Krasis
, Shambleshark: The basic evolving creatures for this deck. Get them out early to either start evolving or provide body blockers.
Renegade Krasis: The other main evolve creature in this deck; when it starts evolving, everything will get bigger quickly. Bow of Nylea and Forced Adaptation gives creatures without evolve +1/+1 counters to benefit from Renegade Krasis.
Sapphire Drake
+
Crowned Ceratok
: These are excellent creatures in a Simic deck; all of your creatures with counters get flying and trample.
Horizon Chimera: More of a utility card in this deck. With the amount of card draw this deck can put out, the life gain can really start to add up.
Kiora's Follower: Not a showstopper by any means, but it does pull its own weight in this deck. Useful for getting the most out of my lands, or ensuring I have a blocker.
Nimbus Swimmer
: Great card in many situations; plays well with Plasm Capture and Vorel of the Hull Clade.
Prophet of Kruphix: One of my favorite cards from the Theros set. Effectively doubles your available mana for creatures and ensures that you have mana available for Plasm Capture. Also, no need to worry about keeping blockers. Very high utility card.
Fathom Mage: Card draw source #1. Between its own evolve, Bow of Nylea, Renegade Krasis, and Forced Adaptation, there are plenty of ways to make sure you get all the cards you need.
Vorel of the Hull Clade: This guy makes your field deadly in a heartbeat. Even as a creature he's a sturdy body to block with (though I wouldn't recommend it), and his activated ability is phenomenal, especially on something like
Nimbus Swimmer
.
Other Spells:
Bred for the Hunt: Card draw source #2. Very useful with the guaranteed damage from
Elusive Krasis
.
Bow of Nylea: Probably the best non-creature in this deck. Every one of its features fits well in this deck; deathtouch makes blocking even your small creatures a risky proposition, +1/+1 counter (always great in this deck), life gain, small flyer removal, and graveyard return. You'll always find a use for this card.
Forced Adaptation: Because sometimes waiting for nature to take its course just isn't fast enough. Forced Adaptation can quickly ramp up your creatures and prime them for some Vorel of the Hull Clade shenanigans.
Give / Take: More +1/+1 counters AND card draw source #3. You can have some fun with this and Fathom Mage; with a +1/+1 counter already on it, you can completely refill your hand!
Kiora, the Crashing Wave: It's about time Simic got some Planeswalker love! And Kiora plays fantastically in this deck: Her +1 lets me stall out an opponent's big creature, her -1 is a mini Urban Evolution, and her -5 just finishes games. Fantastic.
Plasm Capture: Counter spell that gives me mana back? Fantastic! Even better if you have a
Nimbus Swimmer
in hand; a potential 9/9 drop on turn 5 is nothing to laugh at. (Against heavy ramp decks, I've gotten out Nimbus Swimmer as a 13/13 on turn 6). Even without [[Nimbus Swimmer, that mana will always be put to use.
Unexpected Results: This is a fun card. Either you get to cast a spell for free (great for any card in this deck except
Nimbus Swimmer
and Plasm Capture), or you get a land on the battlefield and return Unexpected Results to your hand.
Urban Evolution: Card draw source #4, plus an additional land. One of the reasons this deck can play for the lategame is the ramping you get from this card.
