So the playgroup here is sick of standard... yep, that's right, sick of standard. It took me two sets (RTR and THS) to realize that standard itself is so limited and gives you access to so few cards when there are so many awesome cards there. And Theros really made things even less exciting for me. Maybe it's just me... but with the rotation approaching, I keep getting more and more angry at it. So we decided to defy it altogether.
Recently I went to a completely casual event with my Insidious Justice deck slightly spiked with 3-4 non-standard cards and bam! it actually worked. It beat a well-rounded goblins deck, Melira Pod and even lands-based aggression kicking my tush with Creeping Tar Pit and Nephalia's Drownyard (I feel so lucky I had so much universal removal at hand). I did get completely owned by an incredibly sick Sneak Attack deck that was relying on Force of Will coupled with Brainstorm and fetchlands to grab the right ingredients... but then again, you can't win them all.
So I decided to try and spike my standard deck even further into a (more or less) fun deck. I don't intend to invest much in it, so no fetchlands or Jace, the Mind Sculptor or Liliana of the Veil or other crazy expensive stuff. Let's try and keep it real!
What I am a bit unhappy about it now is that I have so little relevant black in it, that I just feel it's a bit too U/W. Any really good cards I might be able to incorporate to make it feel more black without having to empty my pockets and synergizing with what I have here?
Wrath effects work really nice in tandem with the D-Sphere effects because altogether they are very flexible and can get rid of any types of threats. I didn't really see planeswalkers either so I decided to go for Swords to Plowshares for the superior CMC and flexibility in this deck.
As for finishers, right now AEtherling and Elspeth, Sun's Champion do the heavy work, and they work really well. So few people actually play ability-dampening stuff that they both finish the game quite fast... and are quite difficult to deal with once they hit the battlefield. But I bet there are better finishers out there that would work. So let me know what suggestions you might have! I am really curious on how this deck will turn out.
