Mono blue control on a tight budget!

FAQ:

Q: Why are you building this?

A: I love blue as a color in magic; some of the most fun things you can do fall within the realm of blue spells. Similarly, my playstyle is control; I like to slow things down and take over in the lategame. However, like many other Magic enthusiasts, I work on a very limited budget; the mission, then is to prove that good control doesn't have to cost you $200!

Q: Please explain your card choices!

A: As follows:

MAINBOARD:

Jace, Architect of Thought: Thanks to a rcent reprint in the Duel Decks series, this card has become much, much more affordable! He's the stable of a good control deck, and versatile enough to help with the board AND give card draw.

AEtherling: The heart of Deep Blue. I loaded this deck with scry to help us get to this guy. He comes out on Turn 7, survives removal with your extra mana, and then starts swinging for massive damage to finish off the game. And best of all, he doesn't cost a fortune!

Prognostic Sphinx : The budget god of scry. 5 health lets him stop most of those early game flyers that slipped past your guard, and should he attack, you get to dig through 1/20 of your deck with each swing.

Claustrophobia : It's the mono-blue budget version of equivalent control enchantments such as Detention Sphere, although not quite as potent. Also, if you spent the turn playing a creature, you're mana is tapped out, and your opponent takes the chance to play a big creature, THIS is your answer.

Domestication : This one may have caught you off guard. This card, hilariously enough, is useful in just about every matchup, other than planeswalker-heavy Esper Control. It has singlehandedly won me games by grabbing things liks: Courser of Kruphix, Prophet of Kruphix (my favorite!), Elvish Mystic, Deathrite Shaman, Nightveil Specter, Pack Rat, Precinct Captain, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , Voice of Resurgence, Master of Waves, Lotleth Troll, Boros Reckoner, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, etc. etc. An interesting thing about this card is that you can also use it to control creatures with >3 power for one turn, so you can, for example, grab that Stormbreath Dragon or remove that meaty blocker for one turn to finish off the game.

Dissolve : Conditionless counter with added scry! What more could you ask for?

Negate: More control, useful when you leave two mana open to deceive your opponent into thinking they can safely cast that Elspeth, Sun's Champion or that Sphinx's Revelation.

Nullify : Auras, meet your nightmare! Also useful as a turn-2 counter for aggressive early game creatures (I'm lookin' at you, Ash Zealot)!

Syncopate : The bane of the Golgari, the bane of Chandra's Phoenix , of Nighthowler, and all those spells which find extra use within the graveyard. Also serves as a turn 2 conditionless counter!

Omenspeaker : A 3-health blocker with scry-2 for 2 mana. The important thing is the scry: it provides a use for this card even when cast later in the game!

Opportunity: Exactly what it's name implies. Since we can't afford Sphinx's Revelation, this provides us an Opportunity for some nice card draw. Heck, at 6 mana, this even gives us one card more than its wallet-shredding esper counterpart!

Ratchet Bomb: No Supreme Verdict? No problem. This thing gets rid of those pesky Pack Rats, that terrifying Mistcutter Hydra (the bane of this deck), and those evil Rakdos and Aura/hexproof decks that are making the rounds.

Elixir of Immortality : A multi-purpose card. Can serve as lifegain against aggro-heavy decks or graveyard manipulation against mill/golgari/control.

SIDEBOARD:

AEtherize: For fighting aggro, tokens and enchantments, as well as heroic +1/+1 counter decks..

Glaring Spotlight : There are creatures out there ( Gladecover Scout / Witchstalker /Sylvan Caryatid) that come out quickly and resist our Claustrophobia / Domestication thanks to hexproof. This card shines a light of hope against selesnya hexproof enchantment decks! Be sure to reflect the sun's light from your watch directly into your opponent's eyes to give this card maximum strategic effect! (Unless you're in a competitive setting. In that case just let the card do its own job.)

Judge's Familiar: When you're opponent is running that turn one Thoughtseize and you're holding an AEtherling or a Jace, Architect of Thought, why not give them an owl instead? What a hoot! hyuk hyuk. Also helps against control decks and Rakdos aggro decks running Spike Jester / Rakdos Shred-Freak / Tormented Hero / Firedrinker Satyr /etc.)

Opportunity: When it's Control vs. Control, card-draw is everything. You lost game 1? No problem. Give yourself another Opportunity to win! /pun

Pithing Needle: When fighting against T1, we face a lot of cards that are just huge problems. Planeswalkers are a problem. Underworld Connections is a problem. Legendary artifacts are a problem. Monstrosity in green decks is a problem. Let's stick it to 'em with this!

Annul : Theros block demands that you have a solution for enchantments! This card will also prepare the deck for the upcoming Journey into Nyx set (spoiler: there are going to be some utterly incredible artifacts/enchantments coming!)

Cyclonic Rift: For when you just need that extra bit of board control, or you're dealing with nasty planeswalkers.
