Casual Illuna, Apex of Wishes Mutate Deck for Donnie B! Thank you for your support Donnie!

Mutate is a new and fun mechanic to build around. This iteration of the deck is designed to be an interactive creature-based deck, designed to be a 5-6 power level. There are several themes in this deck: Mutate, Clone, Theft, and Stax.

Let's talk Stax first. Mutate is an inherently slow mechanic. You need a non-human target for the mutate on the battle field. Illuna, Apex of Wishes is one of the few mutate creatures with a higher mutate cost than CMC. So, we need to buy ourselves time to set up. Because we're creature based, slowing down non-creature based decks let's us work on setting up a nice target for Illuna.

Mutate and Clone.

-Mutate. We've pretty much added all Mutate creatures that add value. We left out Lore Drakkis because we're not running that many Instant/Sorcery spells, and we lose them to Illuna's trigger.

Mutate is NOT Voltron. You're not looking to build the biggest baddest creature. You're looking to exploit a combo of one-three creatures. Find the right synergies. Once you establish a good mutate stack, begin building a new stack. Or hold mutants for mutate triggers.

Speaking of holding mutates for triggers, we've already noted that mutate is a slow mechanic. The other disadvantage of a mutate ability is that you're kind of restricted on when you can trigger a mutation. We've included as many Flash packages as possible; Leyline of Anticipation, Vedalken Orrery, Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir, and Vivien, Champion of the Wilds. These cards, coupled with Seedborn Muse and Wilderness Reclamation will empower you to abuse mutate triggers. Additionally, Cloudstone Curio and Temur Sabertooth give you the ability to bounce and reuse your mutants.

-Clone. We include a clone package for two reasons. First, so you can exploit the Mutate stack. A clone copies all abilities of a mutate stack. So it doubles your value, OR opens up possibilities to mutate using an opponent's creatures; (we carefully selected Clones that copy any target creature; not just ones you control). Secondly, and maybe more importantly, we include clones so that you're not going all in on a single creature. EDH loves removal. Mutate increases the value of your opponent's single target mutant spells exponentially. Use your clones to protect your value, and copy an existing stack. This is a good reason to perhaps place legendary creatures under non-legendary creatures.

Finally, Theft. Illuna's trigger is a bit fun but chaotic. What better way to embrace this than by extending the chaos to your opponents decks. Etali, Primal Storm and Mind's Dialation fit well here for that purpose. We've also added in Auspicious Starrix and Rashmi, Eternities Crafter to double down (kind of) on Illuna's free-cast effects.
