Standard Competitive Control UB (Dimir) WB (Orzhov) WU (Azorius) WUB (Esper)

Sauron_

Sideboard

Standard Esper control deck.

Mainboard

Counter Spells

Dissolve: currently the best counterspell in standard. Period.

Syncopate: great early or late game, can counter opponent's early drops, or can counter a later win card if they exhaust all mana.

Hero's Downfall: creature/planeswalker removal, great CMC

Bile Blight: awesome token removal, can be used later to keep the creatures from being killed while blocked.

Thoughtseize: best card removal/card advantage spell in print.

Planeswalkers

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver: her +2 and -10 are great for control and card advantage, and the -X can be a win condition in itself.

Jace, Architect of Thought and Jace, the Living Guildpact are insane control/card advantage/PLAYING FOR FREE (Architect Ult.) cards.

Elspeth, Sun's Champion: epic game winner with the token and emblem abilities.

Supreme Verdict: It's a board wipe that they can't do anything about. Done.

Creatures and other Spells

AEtherling : unblockable 8/1 on turn 7. Nuff said.

Blood Baron of Vizkopa + Sphinx's Revelation : great late game combo that gives card advantage while possibly a 10/10 with flying and protection from 2 of the most played colors in standard.

Sideboard

Blood Baron of Vizkopa: adds another win creature if you fell the need.

Deicide : killer against constellation/aura decks.

Detention Sphere: control card against anything.

Elixir of Immortality: nulls the burn decks and helps Blood Baron.

Gainsay : blue counter, extremely low CMC.

Lifebane Zombie : sideboarded so that it doesn't become useless against R/U/B decks, but still awesome.

Pithing Needle: stops other AEtherling s and planeswalkers.

Sin Collector; killer against other control or burn decks.

Devour Flesh : another creature removal if needed.

Playtest

So I decided that, because I was unlikely to make it into Spootyone's playtest, I decided to try it out on my own, this deck versus his.

.

I won the flip, and opted to play second.

My opening hand was a pit of an Island, Temple of Deceit, Temple of Silence , Godless Shrine, Thoughtseize, Syncopate, and Jace, Architect of Thought. Very good T1 through T4 plays.

Spooty's opening hand consisted of a Plains, 2 Fleecmane Lion's, Mana Confluence, Banishing Light, Courser of Kruphix, and Archangel of Thune. I decided to keep them and hope to draw a land before T3, so that I could get the courser out.

Spooty plays first and plays the plains then passes.

I draw a Sphinx's Revelation, play the Shrine, then Thoughtseize the archangel.

Me 18 - Spooty 20

T2 - Spooty draws a Polukranos, World Eater, the plays the Confluence and taps out for the lion.

I draw a Supreme Verdict, then play a Temple of Deceit, scrying a Watery Grave, which promptly goes on the bottom.

Me 18 - Spooty 19

Spooty draws a Elvish Mystic, which he taps the Confluence for then attacks with the lion, I have no way to stop the damage.

I draw a Dissolve, then play the Island, then pass, keeping the 2 counters free to play.

Me 15 - Spooty 18

Spooty draws a Temple of Plenty, which he plays and scrys a Coyrser, which remains, then he taps out with the mystic to play the courser in his hand, but it is dissolved, where I scry another Watery Grave, and it goes on the bottom. He attacks with the lion and I take it.

I draw a Blood Baron of Vizkopa, then play the Temple of Silence , scry another Jace, Architect of Thought, and place it on the bottom.

Me 12 Spooty 17

Spooty draws the other courser and triees to play the Polukranos, but it I hit with a Syncopate and he attacks with the lion.

I draw another Syncopate, but tap out to play the Jace, Architect of Thought, pushed to 5 counters with his +1.

Me 9 Spooty 16

Spooty draws another Plains and he then successfully casts the courser, tapping the mystic (he wouldn't deal any damage due to Jace's ability), and sees the top card is a firest, then plays the plains and gains a life. Attacks with the lion for 2, and I take it.

I thankfully draw a Mutavault and play the Baron, putting Jace up to 6 counters.

Me 7 Spooty 15

Spooty draws the forest, revealing another one underneath, plays it for 1 life, then casts the Banishing Light on my Blood Baron of Vizkopa and the second lion. He attacks for 3 with the lion and courser.

I draw a Hallowed Fountain, then play the Supreme Verdict and wipe all of Spooty's creatures. Jace to 7 counters.

Me 4 Spooty 15

Spooty draws the forest and plays it, then passes, now going into topdeck mode.

I draw a Hero's Downfall and play the fountain tapped, then cast the Revelation for 2 cards and 2 life, drawing a Godless Shrine and Mana Confluence. Jace to 8 counters.

Me 6 Spooty 15

Spooty draws another forest and plays it passing.

I draw a Temple of Enlightenment, playing it and scrying another revelation, which I keep on top. Jace to 9 counters, will use him next turn after the revelation.

Me 6 Spooty 15

Spooty draws an Elvish Mystic and plays it.

I draw the Revelation, play the confluence, pay the revelation for full tap (5 life and 5 cards), drawing a Watery Grave, Bile Blight, Supreme Verdict, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, and AEtherling . I play the Jace's ultimate, selecting another AEtherling from my deck and an Archangel of Thune from Spooty's. Then I cast both of those and discard a Godless Shrine

Me 11 Spooty 15

Spooty draws a Sylvan Caryatid and plays it.

I draw another Ashiok, then tap for another 4 and make AEtherling 8/2 unblockable, and attack with that and the Arachngel of Thune. Jace up to 2 counters, and I exile a courser, nanishing light, and forest with ashiok (5 counters).

Me 14 Spooty 4

Spooty draws an Archangel, and plays it.

I draw a Temple of Enlightenment scrying a Mutavault onto the bottom. I cast the Hero's Downfall on the angel and attack with a beefed AEtherling for the win (12th turn).

I win round 1.

Spooty would have had me much earlier on had I not Supreme Verdicted his whole board, then I survived with a huge Sphinx's Revelation, and I had the major card advantage from there with him topdecking a lot of lands.

Now I think I'll add the other Blood Baron of Vizkopa, both Lifebane Zombie s, and both Detention Spheres in place of a Mutavault, a Dissolve, a Jace, the Living Guildpact, a Syncopate, and 1 ashiok, the nightmare weaver. I land won't make much of a difference, I have enough kill spells for the counters to be alright, and Ashiok is more of a kill card than a control.

I was happily surprised with Spooty's deck, as it played really well, but hit a rough spot when he went topdecking and only got mana ramp. I feel that it is very well put together, but fell prey far too often than it should have. I am siding in the Mistcutter Hydra playset in exchange for both Setessan Tactics (I don't have enough creatures), a Garruk, Caller of Beasts, and a Polukranos, World Eater, (as I said, I don't have enough creatures).

Round 2

My opening hand was miserable, 1 land, a Hallowed Fountain, 2 Hero's Downfall, 1 Lifebane Zombie , 2 Sphinx's Revelation, and a Detention Sphere. My mulligan was much better.

Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Lifebane Zombie , Bile Blight, Watery Grave, and 2 Godless Shrines.

Spootyone's opening hand also deserved a mulligan: 2 Forests, 2 Temple of Plentys, 1 Plains, 1 Banishing Light, and 1 Ajani, Mentor of Heroes.

His mulligan was, like mine, far better. 1 Forest, 1 Temple of Plenty, 1 Elvish Mystic, 1 Fleecemane Lion , 1 Courser of Kruphix, and 1 Mistcutter Hydra.

I play first, a tapped Shrine and pass.

Spooty draws a Plains, then plays a forest into the mystic.

Me 20 Spooty 20

I draw a Supreme Verdict, then play the Watery Grave and pass.

Spooty draws an Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, then plays the plains and taps out for Courser of Kruphix.

Me 20 Spooty 20

I draw a Hallowed Fountain, then cast it, taking the 2 life, and play Lifebane Zombie , exiling the Mistcutter Hydra from Spooty's hand.

Spooty draws the Plains revealed with the courser, then shows an Archangel of Thune, on top, plays the temple, scry's the archangel again and leaves it there. Taps for the lion and attacks with the courser and mystic, I block the mystic with the zombie and they both die. I take 2 damage.

Me 16 Spooty 21

I draw a Temple of Enlightenment, then cast it, scrying a Hero's Downfall, which remains, and cast a Bile Blight on the lion, destroying it.

Spooty draws the Archangel of Thune, revealing another hydra beneath it, he casts a plains (4th land), and attacks with the courser for 2.

Me 14 Spooty 22

I draw the Hero's Downfall, kill the courser, and play the other shrine tapped.

Spooty draws the Mistcutter Hydra, plays the forest, and taps for angel.

Me 14 Spooty 22

I draw a Thoughtseize, then cast it, removing the Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, and keeping the Supreme Verdict for next turn because of the revealed Hydra.

Spooty draws a Garruk, Caller of Beasts, and taps out for a 4/4 Hydra, attacks with both, and I lose 7.

Me 7 Spooty 22

I draw a Detention Sphere, then Supreme Verdict the board, removing the Hydra and the Angel.

Spooty draws a Sylvan Caryatid, plays it and passes.

Me 7 Spooty 22

I draw a Hero's Downfall, then tap out for the Blood Baron of Vizkopa.

Spooty draws another Mistcutter Hydra, and I have to make a decision, hydra or Garruk. I choose Garruk (Spootyone I would like to hear your opinion on this), then uses the +1, and puts a courser, mystic, and angel into is hand and a forest and Mana Confluence onto the bottom.

Me 7 Spooty 22

I draw another Hero's Downfall, and cast it, removing Garruk, and attack with the baron for 4 lifegain and damage.

Spooty draws a forest, then taps all lands for the Archangel of Thune and Elvish Mystic.

Me 11 Spooty 18

I draw a Dissolve, hten cast the other Hero's Downfall on the angel and attack with the baron, blocked by the mystic, for 4 lifegain.

Spooty draws a Mana Confluence, then casts it right after the courser for 1 life, then taps out for a 4/4 Hydra, and attacks for 4.

Me 7 Spooty 18 (-1 for the confluence)

I draw a Hallowed Fountain, then cast it tapped and Detention Sphere the Hydra, and attack with the baron, unblocked.

Spooty draws a Temple Garden, revealing a Sylvan Caryatid on the deck, and plays it for 1 lifegain, attacks with the courser for 2, has now gone into topdecking.

Me 10 Spooty 15

I draw a Mutavault and cast it, then attack with the baron and is blocked by caryatid, the caryatid dies, 4 lifegain.

Spooty draws the caryatid, revealing a Plains, casts both for 1 lifegain, and attacks with the courser. I chose not to counter the caryatid because there was another courser on top, and that posed a much bigger threat.

Me 12 Spooty 16

I draw a Watery Grave and play it tapped, attack with the baron and is blocked by the caryatid. 4 lifegain.

Spooty draws the courser, tries to play but I Dissolve it (I scry an Island and put it on bottom), then plays the confluence revealed for 1 life, and shows a forest on top. Attacks with the courser.

Me 14 Spooty 17

I draw a Jace, Architect of Thought, play it, put up to 5 counters, and attack with the baron. 4 damage and 4 lifegain.

Spooty draws the forest, revealing an Ajani, Mentor of Heroes on the top, plays the forest for 1 life, and attacks with the courser for 1 damage.

Me 17 Spooty 14

I draw a Mana Confluence, then use Jace's -2 to reveal another baron, a Supreme Verdict, and a Watery Grave, the first was one pile (bottom), the last 2 went into my hand, Jace to 3. Attack with the baron and Mutavault for 6 damage, 4 lifegain.

Spooty draws the Ajani, uses the +1 to put 3 counters on Courser, Ajani to 5, reveals a Temple of Plenty on top, and attacks for 5. Plays the temple for 1 lifegain, and reveals a Mutavault,

Me 16 Spooty 9

I draw a Temple of Deceit and play it scry a Syncopate onto the bottom, Jace to 1 with his -2, revealing a Syncopate and Thoughtseize to the bottom and an Elspeth, Sun's Champion to my hand. I cast Elspeth and get the 3 tokens, she has 5 counters, attack with Baron and Mutavault for 6 damage 4 lifegain.

Spooty concedes with him at 3 life and me at 20.

I win the Game

Afterthoughts: I felt that this was a much closer match up than it seemed, Spooty was always 1 or 2 turns away from killing me about halfway through each game. All he needed was 1 more large creature and he would have been able to deal the necessary damage and keep just out of reach of my removal. Once again I was pleased with my deck's performance, and quite impressed at how it was able to negotiate around the challenges.

Removed the three Azorius Charm to make room for Thoughtseize, I kicked myself when I realized I had forgotten this at first.
