The core theme of this deck, beyond high toughness creatures, is life gain for me, and life loss for my opponents. Almost every card in the deck will cause life gain/loss, and several of the deck's win cons are based upon life gain/loss. Therefore, the deck can work effectively on its own without Doran, the Siege Tower. Though, the deck's hidden strength comes out when the commander is on board.

If Doran gets removed, then the deck also has Huatli, the Sun's Heart and Assault Formation, which can act as backup, in order to make high toughness creatures dish out large heaps of damage each turn.
