Description

A Jeskai control/stax deck that looks to win either through commander damage or setting up infinite mana to deal infinite damage with Jeska.

Introduction

I have always enjoyed playing Jeskai. The colour identity allows for game play that involves elements of control whilst bringing in red effects. Most of my Jeskai decks have live in the high synergy and combo decks, however my store meta has a problem of too many proactive decks and not enough proper reactive decks. As an effort to answer to this meta I have put together this list based on cards I already have and inexpensive stax pieces. Unfortunately many stax pieces need a lot more reprints before they are easily affordable. I figured that with these two commanders I can focus on controlling the table more, whilst still operating a slower game plan.

A hand that will allow you to ramp out to Ishia quickly with protection and board control is the best kind of hand to take.
The plan is to play as passively as possible. Try to resolve Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker as early as possible, and preferably with some way to protect it after casting it the same turn. Ishai will quickly become a threat while you lay down stax pieces to slow down opponent's game-plans and keep mana open for interaction. Having a large evasive creature that can deal commander damage allows you to aim it at the most threatening player, to remove them quicker from the game. Alternatively if the game goes on long enough, assemble a mana combo to kill your opponents using Jeska, Thrice Reborn.
Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter with at least three artifacts that produce mana will allow produce as much mana as needed. This can then be used to cast and active Jeska's -X ability over and over to kill all opponents.
  • Angel's Grace - Thassa's Oracle combos have become a massive problem. Angel's Grace gives a low cost way to answer this on a turn someone attempts to win, continuing the game.
  • Treasure Nabber - Fast mana rocks such as Mana Crypt are a massive problem, especially when you don't have access to them yourself. Whilst Treasure Nabber is 3 cmc, it can still provide you with value if your opponents wish to continue using their ramp. If they don't use the rocks to stop you from ramping, you are slowing down your opponents.
  • Strict Proctor - This is a useful piece for shutting down or at least slowing down value commanders such as Tatyova, Benthic Druid, Omnath, Locus of Creation and Kodama of the East Tree + Sakashima of a Thousand Faces
  • Lavinia, Azorius Renegade - Not only does she stop opponents going off with casting things for free, she slows down opponents who rely on cheap mana rocks and also stops anyone from playing mana rocks that cost nothing to cast.
  • Cursed Totem is an excellent piece of tech to slow down creature based ramp, but can also shut down certain commanders such as Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, Magda, Brazen Outlaw and Thrasios, Triton Hero
  • Force of Will - don't own a copy of this expensive card
  • Magus of the Moon - shockingly you do not want to destroy your own mana base in a three colour deck.
  • How much you're willing to spend on singles and what cards are already part of your collection will limit how you put together a deck of your own. In the spirit of lower budget players this section will include some cheap alternatives for key cards over $5. I'll be ignoring lands as you can just replace those with basics in a pinch.

  • Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation, Flusterstorm and Force of Negation - Counterspell, Mana Tithe, Spell Pierce, Lofty Denial
  • Rhystic Study - Psychic Possession
  • Smothering Tithe and Curse of Opulence - Shiny Impetus
  • Giver of Runes Mother of Runes - Benevolent Bodyguard, Devoted Caretaker
