EldrAniMyr (Maximum Overdrive Version)

Commander / EDH

RexStrangelove

My goal with this deck was to make a competitive deck that is still fun to play/play against. As such, all my U/R insta-win combos are sitting this one out in favor of good, old-fashioned, creature-based M:tG--the way your parents used to play it.

Most of the Animar decks I've seen on here seem to rely chiefly on bouncing your own creatures back to your hand so you can play them again and grow Animar. This is a sound mechanic, and I have incorporated elements of it into this deck (see Peel from Reality , Grinning Ignus, etc.), but taken a largely different direction with it.

Cheap, mana-producing creatures. Myr are my favorite, mostly because their low and colorless mana costs mean that you can more-often-than-not play them for free. Myr Superion is the only exception, in that it produces no mana. A free 5/6 is just a cool thing to have.

Besides the Myr, we have Birds of Paradise and several of its variations, along with a bunch of the cheaper Eldrazi dudes who make sacrificial mana tokens. While these tokens obviously will not trigger Animar's ability, they don't really have to.

The meat and potatoes is just a bunch of massive Eldrazi. I tried to avoid colored mana symbols as much as possible, and those crazy interdimensional monsters fit the bill. I mostly stuck to the older Eldrazi, just because Annihilator is completely insane and Ingest seems only so-so.

The Hydras were all selected for utility beyond being vastly underprice big creatures in Animar's presence. Kalonian Hydra turns a middling Animar into a monster in no time, while Vastwood Hydra and Lifeblood Hydra provide serious disincentives against their own destruction. Genesis Hydra offers competitive bang for your buck, and Savageborn Hydra and Apocalypse Hydra have the potential to do the most damage-per-mana-spent of any creature in the deck.

Add in some Praetors, a pinch of Cascade, and a Surrak Dragonclaw to keep your dudes safe from the counter game, and I think this deck can totally hold its own in a competitive game of cards.

In the interest of keeping things interesting, I've tried to avoid the all-too predictable staples--although Whispersilk Cloak, Mask of Avacyn and Lightning Greaves may well make their way into this deck once I get sick of having my Animar killed all the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
