Emperor Pilaf's Day at the Beach

Commander / EDH* WB (Orzhov)

Murdock

Maybeboard

This is my second and my only EDH deck. My first was a Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck that I hardly ever enjoyed. I dismantled it for a few key cards and created what you see here.

I love this deck and I'm very proud of it. It's fun to pilot and makes you feel like what you do is relevant and actually matters. The deck can be broken down as such:

Removal: This deck likes to run answers and usually I'll find more than a few throughout any given game. This ranges from spot removal, exile effects, and wraths. The removal suite also includes all of my sac shenanigans with Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter or any other given sac outlet/effect. Most of my removal is creature based but it does have ways to deal with other permanents. Ex.: Angel of Despair, Duplicant, Wrath of God, Martyr's Bond, Attrition

Recursion: Most of the creatures in the deck have a nice ability stapled to them that go along with each other. That being said, being able to recycle these creatures for repeated effects every turn is awesome. Ex.: Sun Titan, Reveillark, Karmic Guide, Phyrexian Reclamation, Animate Dead

Utility: This category includes the various support spells that keep the deck moving and keep it a well-oiled machine. Card draw, token production, acceleration, etc. - all help towards maintaining my board presence. Ex.: Suture Priest, Harvester of Souls, Aura of Silence, Bloodghast, Deathbringer Liege, Elspeth Tirel, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite

So there ya go. Hopefully this will be of help if you're looking for ways to beef up your B/W deck. If you have any suggestions, comments, questions, or whatever let me know.

Updates Add

With help of my friends therichterlens and zoitspider, this deck has become a reality. I haven't had the chance to play in a multiplayer game unfortunately, but the 1 vs 1 matches I've had indicate I actually knew what the hell I was doing when I made this deck.

Here are some things, both negative and positive, that I've noticed thus far:

Pros

  • Plenty of answers via spot removal and wrath effects

  • Decent amount of creature recursion (from both my graveyard and my opponents)

  • Relatively low curve and just enough mana rocks to allow being able to cast multiple spells per turn

  • Life gain gives me a good buffer against more aggressive decks until I can find an answer

Cons

  • Could use more card draw

  • Needs more ways to get around effects that give hexproof/ shroud, problack/ prowhite, indestructibility, etc.

  • Needs more spot removal that doesn't have a drawback, more ways to deal with non-creature permanents, and more instant speed answers
