Equipments from the wastelands

Commander / EDH Attach Enchant Equip

0nilink

Hello all, this deck is an upgrade of the Scrappy Survivors deck. I’m looking for suggestions, especially if I missed any obvious additions.

Context

I bought all the Fallout cards from the Secret Lair and wanted to use them all. Spreading them between other decks wasn’t really an option for me, considering the high contrast between the Fallout artwork and the Magic universe.

I already had the Scrappy Survivors deck untouched, so I decided to upgrade it, thinking I probably had other good equipment in my collection. Plus, I’ve never had an equipment deck before.

Deck Building Rules

It was mandatory to include all Fallout Secret Lair cards. I knew that meant including cards like Anger that don’t synergize at all with the deck; even worse, some cards, like Sphere of Resistance, are really bad in this low-curve deck. Fortunately, some cards, like Steelshaper's Gift, are actually great additions.

At first, I wanted to include only Fallout artwork in the deck. I went through all printed Fallout cards and found a few good ones since I now had access to more colors. But, in the end, I broke my rule to include a few good and unused equipment cards I had in my binder. I also added a few “equipment/voltron” staples to make the deck a bit more consistent. I tried to minimize this behavior, and I forced myself to create a custom alter in the Fallout theme for each “foreign” card I included.

Alters

As I mentioned, creating custom alters was a way to limit non-Fallout cards. I used AI to make the art and spent quite a bit of time mimicking the graphic style seen in the existing Fallout cards.

I also did my best to recreate the original images, especially with characters. I struggled with a few, like Umezawa's Jitte. It was impossible to get an actual Jitte; I suppose there aren’t enough Jitte images available to draw inspiration from (one of the limits of AI, I imagine). I ended up photoshopping the Jitte from the original card! I also had trouble getting swords in a horizontal position for some reason.

In the end, I’m quite happy with the result and enjoyed the process of making them. I love how Bruenor Battlehammer and Danitha, New Benalia's Light came out.

Commander

The inclusion of the Fallout Secret Lair cards added blue to the deck. I could have stopped there and used Aragorn, the Uniter as a commander, but I didn’t want to exclude black, so I decided to go with five colors even if I’m kinda splashing blue and black for the moment.

Kenrith, the Returned King was a solid choice. He’s versatile, and his cheapest abilities align with my most-used colors. In the end, though, I chose Cromat to be the commander for his Voltron abilities.

Future of the Deck and Suggestions

I’m definitely planning to upgrade this deck in the future, keeping the “Fallout art” rule. If you think I missed any obvious cards among the Fallout cards, please let me know.

The deck isn’t meant to be ultra-strong or optimal. That would be hard with the automatic inclusions I imposed on myself, but every suggestion is welcome.

Final Words

Thank you for reading my description! I enjoyed creating this deck, and I feel it has a lot of room for improvement. Also, if you’d like any high-quality alters I made, please let me know, and I’ll gladly share them.
