A Commander / EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) Artifact deck with combos explained

When I started to research an Artifact themed EDH build, I found this TappedOut deck at the top of my search engine results. What I've put together here couldn't have been done without MattTheNinja's publication.

Why not use that guys?

There were a lot of great things going on there for sure. Even so, play testing showed me that the mana-base needed a revisit and I had a damn hard time fetching combo pieces when they weren't an artifact. Also, I don't think he's updated it for a couple years...

What did I change?

Mana-base now includes fetches, other good to haves & Tron lands. I stripped out Deadeye Navigator and his combo pieces which happened to be some of the other 'non-artifact' cards. I replaced him with Metal worker + Staff of Domination along with staples like Mind's Eye & Duplicant, filled in holes with instants like Counterspell, Angel's Grace & Remand a couple more artifacers Muzzio, Visionary Architect & Hanna, Ship's Navigator a couple more planeswalkers Ugin, the Spirit Dragon & Jace, the Mind Sculptor & a couple more recents like Anguished Unmaking & Blade of Selves.

What is this deck trying to do?

There is enough consistency here to 'choose your own adventure' based on your starting hand. However, the deck naturally navigates your play towards quick and easy access to 'giant' artifacts for offensive plays with Blightsteel Colossus or defensive plays with Darksteel Forge without tunneling one way or the other. IE, the cards you play to fetch a monster or a wall are the same. Definitely not a build to win by attrition and a well timed Stony Silence or Hurkyl's Recall could blow you out.

This is my EDH deck. I play these cards. TBH, I don't encourage anyone to break the bank to play this game if you don't have the funds to do so. Plenty of alternatives to use as placeholders and odds are you'll have more interesting games with offbeat and forgotten cards than what you may see in this deck list. I've been fortunate enough to have been playing this game (on and off) for years so my collection has been a mix of organic finds and low priced snags.

Thanks for checking out my deck - below is a breakdown on how to drive this bus:

Combos to generate Infinite Mana

Pili-Pala + Grand Architect + 1 Blue Mana

  1. Use the to activate the Architect's ability to turn Pili blue
  2. Then activate the Architect's ability to tap Pili as a blue creature and add to your mana pool
  3. Use the mana to activate Pili's untap ability

Now that Pili is blue, you can use the create spend steps and generate an infinite amount of any color mana from Pili

Metal worker + Staff of Domination + 3 Artifact cards in hand

  1. Tap Metal worker and reveal 3 artifacts in your hand adding xx = to your mana pool
  2. Spend & tap Staff of Dominance to untap Metal worker
  3. Spend to untap the Staff

The above actions will leave you with each time you complete the cycle. If you repeat the process an infinite number of times, you have now generated your infinite colorless mana pool. And, yes - you can use the staff to generate infinite life & infinite card draw...

Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith +

  1. Tap Basalt Monolith to add
  2. Untap Basalt Monolith using the
  3. Trigger Rings of Brighthearth and copy the Basalt Monolith untap ability. Use that to pay for the ability.
  4. Tap Basalt Monolith to add
  5. Allow the untap from the Rings of Brighthearth to resolve.

The above steps leave you with and an untapped Basalt Monolith. This leaves you with exactly more mana available to you each time you run through the cycle. Run through the steps an infinite number of times, and voila.

Power Artifact + Basalt Monolith

  1. Enchant Basalt Monolith with Power Artifact
  2. Tap Basalt Monolith to add
  3. Untap Basalt Monolith for

The above action leaves you with Repeat the process an infinite number of times.

Board Control using Infinite Mana

Infinite color mana + Ethersworn Adjudicator

If you don't have the Pili/Architect combo in place, you can have Mycosynth Lattice on the board to turn your colorless mana into any color.

Infinite color mana + Memnarch

If you don't have the Pili/Architect combo in place, you can have Mycosynth Lattice on the board to turn your colorless mana into any color.

Win Conditions using Infinite Mana

Infinite mana + Pentavus + | Blood Artist or Disciple of the Vault |

Use your mana to endlessly remove/add counters to Pentavus this cycle will trigger Blood Artist and/or Disciple of the Vault pinging your opponent(s) to death.

Infinite mana + Debt to the Deathless

Or, just enough mana to win...

Infinite mana + Oona, Queen of the Fae + | ah Black or ah Blue mana |

Mill your opponent out

Win Conditions without Infinite Mana

Sharuum the Hegemon + | Sculpting Steel or Phyrexian Metamorph | + | Blood Artist or Disciple of the Vault |

This is exploiting the 'Legend' rule.

  1. Have Sharuum the Hegemon & Blood Artist and/or Disciple of the Vault on the battlefield
  2. Cast your artifact copy artifact spell targeting Sharuum
  3. Legend rule takes affect
  4. Send Sharuum to the graveyard
  5. Trigger Blood Artist and/or Disciple of the Vault to ping an opponent
  6. When the artifact copy artifact enters the battlefield, target Sharuum in the graveyard

And the process goes into an endless cycle of using enters the battlefield triggers to re-pull either Sharuum or his copy to the table while at the same time sending which ever version was on the table prior (back) to the graveyard. Each time you run through the cycle, you ping an opponent 1 life.

Thopter Assembly + Time Sieve = infinite turns

  1. Start your turn by returning Thopter Assembly to your hand, leaving behind 5 thopter artifact tokens
  2. Activate the Time Sieve and sac your thopters
  3. Re-cast Thopter Assembly before the end of this turn

By repeating the above as your next turn starts, you'll have as many turns as you need to create your win condition. Now, yes - you can activate Time Sieve without all the thopters BUT, it's a repeatable & well oiled machine if you can follow the above steps.

Other Combos

Nevinyrral's Disk + Darksteel Forge

Repeatable board wipe since the disk can't destroy itself

Mana Web + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Locks down your opponents mana-base

Blade of Selves + | Treasure Mage or Trinket Mage or Magister Sphinx or either colossus |

Multiplies your enter the battlefield triggers.

Update for Kaldesh! Swapped a swamp for Inventors' Fair and Padeem, Consul of Innovation for Blind Obedience. There's a couple other interesting cards in the set so far; but, these three seem to sync with this build without much play-testing. Fair's fetching for any artifact is pretty sweet. Padeem is basically a theme ready commander hidden in this build. Deprive was not really singing well; so, I've been waiting for a replacement. Blind is a wonky card that helps give the deck 'some' interaction with the table. BUT, this is a play to win build. I have another alternative EDH deck here.

Update for Aether Revolt Spoilers - Tezzeret, Master of Metal is a decision to be made here. What I don't like is it's an iteration on Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas design. Clear overlap. Obvious differences aside, it's the casting cost that forces my hand away from this as a choice here. There's a lot of big drops in this deck and the mechanics work to get artifacts, not planeswalkers, on the table. I really can't see this being a viable option in this build unless you're looking for a budget option. Even then, you'll need to wait some time to get the card at a reasonable price point. Disallow is going to be a very popular card in standard & edh. I will likely play test this in lieu of the Counterspell or something else swappable. It's an answer for comboing out in a way Stifle leaves us wanting. Can't wait to see what else we have from this new set...
