Hello! This is an examination of how the 1st FNM went.
First, some changes. The sideboard was amended to include 2 Devour Flesh, so still a 14-card sideboard at that point. I have since added a 4th Loxodon Smiter; an explanation follows.
Match the First: Naya Humans Aggro, 2-1
Generally, this match affirmed my choice of Divine Reckoning as a valid wipe alternative to Merciless Eviction. My opponent's choice of cards like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Lightning Mauler, Silverblade Paladin and Mayor of Avabruck
Flip meant that he could easily swarm me within the first for the five turns, critical turns for a deck that is basically stalling to an Obzedat, Ghost Council or Thragtusk.
So, first match went to him. Sided in 2 Divine Reckoning and 2 Nevermore, dropping all three Orzhov Charm and a Desecration Demon. He managed to Boros Charm
the initial Divine Reckoning, but the flashback was amazingly invaluable, and even with a Thalia in-play, I managed to sweep his board while hanging on to my Thragtusk. The second game was a mana flood for him, and I won.
Nevermore was sided in during this match to deal with the Boros Reckoner he would regularly play on turn 3 or 4. Unfortunately, every time I sideboarded Nevermore into my deck this night, I didn't see it. As such, I'm questioning its presence in the deck.
Match the Second: Junk Reanimator, 2-1
This match was a bit of an anomaly, in that my opponent didn't manage to play a single Unburial Rites, despite plenty of Jarad's Orders and Mulch. His Vorapede was a challenge, and when Griselbrand came out near the end of game 1, I knew I was finished.
Game 2 saw me siding in 4 Oblivion Ring for 3 Orzhov Charm and a Tragic Slip. I might reverse that in the future, dropping my Slips for the Rings when facing Undying and massive creatures like Griselbrand and Angel of Serenity. Haven't yet decided. Regardless, I kept drawing the Rings in both the following games, and their removal potential really put me over the top. Another point for Tylerdor.
Match the Third: Jund Midrange, 1-2
This was a disappointment for me. While his Thragtusks and card: Huntermaster of the Fells weren't terribly difficult to handle, considering my removal, his utility spells, particularly Rakdos's Return, really screwed up my gameplay, not to mention only getting 2 lands in play in game 2, which became a total wash.
Regardless, the Return is why I've chosen to side in the 4th Smiter from now on. I lost the match, in the end, but it taught me more than my other two matches. Losing is often like that.
Some questions for the brilliant minds of tappedout.net:
1.) Is Nevermore worth it?
2.) Might Sorin, Lord of Innistrad be a good side-in against aggro and discard? I can see dropping 2 Nevermore for 2 Sorins in the sideboard.
3.) Would Tribute to Hunger be a good replacement for Devour Flesh?
Generally, I'm seeing that my sideboard is going to be how I win games with this deck. It's a slow, thoughtful deck, where each round took 20 minutes, generally speaking. Compared to the Jund aggro I was running earlier, it wins less but I enjoy it more, partially, perhaps, because it isn't a pure netdeck.
Regardless, your thoughts and feedback are much appreciated.
