This is a deck I built during Kaladesh Standard that I had a lot of fun playing!
It's essentially Izzet Control but trying to get added value from the instants we'll inevitably be casting through things like Dynavolt Tower, Thermo-Alchemist and Paradox Engine.
A lot of these cards have now rotated, but I had a lot of fun memories playing this in Standard and wanted to memorialise it in this decklist. I'm sure a Modern version could be made. Whether it'd be competitive or not though is another question entirely!
I won't be updating this deck any further but definitely feel free to comment or make hindsight suggestions about how this could've been tweaked and adjusted. If you do end up making a Modern equivalent let me know, I'd love to see it!
Card Selection
Glimmer of Genius will keep our hand full whilst also topping up our energy for Harnessed Lightning, Dynavolt Tower or Aether Hub.
Fevered Visions will also be helping to keep our hand full whilst pinging our opponents life total each turn.
We have a pretty standard suite of burn spells in the form of Shock, Fiery Temper and Harnessed Lightning. Shock for the option of creature or player, Fiery Temper for a good discard target should we have too many cards in hand from Visions and Glimmer's at the end of turn (which I found quite common), and Harnessed Lightning for a good outlet to dump energy into for any big creatures we want to remove.
We also have a pretty standard suite of counterspells in the form of Negate, Spell Shrivel and Disallow. At the time Aetherworks Marvel was a very popular deck, so Negate was important against that matchup, and Disallow would allow me to counter Marvel or the activated ability from it (if I didn't have Disallow in hand at the time Marvel was put out). Spell Shrivel as a pretty standard catch-all, which proved useful against Prized Amalgam decks at the time too. And Brutal Explosion was just a nice modular card that provided some useful options, acting as a counter of sorts by allowing me to bounce a spell on the stack, or a creature on the field.
Torrential Gearhulk will be flashing in to be a blocker/beater (to help us finish the game), whilst also casting whatever instant we need from our graveyard the time. Whether that be a counterspell, a burn spell, or more card draw.
Thermo-Alchemist will be constantly untapping from our instants and pinging our opponent for life. We may even get double untap triggers per instant if we have a Paradox Engine out, (which will also untap Dynavolt Tower and Torrential Gearhulk after combat to keep him up as a blocker). I have particularly fond memories of throwing 1 or 2 Shock's to my opponent's face in quick succession whilst having Paradox Engine plus a couple Thermo-Alchemist out and biting off a sizable chunk of their life total with all the subsequent triggers!
