In July '14 I decided to return to MTG after a 15+ year break. With the M15 set introduction nearing and only 3-4 months to play a full standard deck before rotation, I decided the most cost-efficient way for me to return was to find a Theros Block deck that played well in the style I enjoyed most as a kid, White Weenie. Craig Wescoe's Deal or No Deal proved that starting block.
I quickly found that an enchantment heavy deck was going to struggle with so much effective removal in standard. So the balance shifted towards beefing 1-2 powerful characters and providing them the protection and evasion to win the tempo game.
My current plan is as follows:
Vs MonoBlack - Protection
-1 Bioshift, -1
Hidden Strings
, -1
Akroan Skyguard
, -1
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer
, -1 Aqueous Form, +3 Swan Song, +2 Detention Sphere (or Celestial Flare against Prot White]].
Vs Burn - Life Gain
-2 Mizzium Skin, -2
Battlewise Hoplite
, -1
Akroan Skyguard
, -1
Hidden Strings
, -1 Aqueous Form, -1 Bioshift, +3
Swift Justice
, +2 Gift of Orzhova, +2 Ordeal of Heliod, +1
Triton Tactics
.
Vs Monsters - Evasion
-1 Mizzium Skin, +1
Triton Tactics
Vs Esper Control - Protection
-2
Akroan Skyguard
, -1 Bioshift, +3 Swan Song
For the future I am looking to trial swapping out Brimaz, King of Oreskos for Ajani, Caller of the Pride; flying and double strike seems like too nice a finisher to ignore.
By the same token I am considering if the deck can manage splashing red to enable access to Boros Charm. All the aspects of the card work well in this deck: Double Strike surprise; Indestructible creatures; and, damage to the face to finish.
The final card that I'm contemplating seriously is Nivmagus Elemental. He's a bottle-rocket when he goes off but inconsistent otherwise.
Beyond this I'm trying to bulk out my usable collection, I'd prefer to have two more Gift of Orzhova instead of Ordeals, equally I'm trying to grab an extra two Mizzium Skin to round out my protection options.
