From Their Ashes We Will Build (Jaya EDH)

Commander / EDH* Aggro Burn Infect Mono-Red Multiplayer

TheCardPool

Sideboard

The goal of this deck is to gain control of the board with all the best red cards at your disposal. With Jaya Ballard, Task Mage at the helm you are make your opponents fear your never ending spot removal and board wipe potential. This is especially great with her low mana cost and being in red you have various forms of haste to make her a threat as soon as she hits the field.

Her first effect can be the bane of most decks. If your opponent(s) are indeed running blue you are able to disrupt their board with ease. Even if you are versing a deck without blue there are two cards that can make this effect work. Distorting Lens is the most ideal to destroy any permanent, but Scuttlemutt is a serviceable plan b.

Now her second effect will be the most relevant in the game. It is a Lightning Strike you can use every turn. It's great at removing troublesome creatures and chipping away a player(s) life. As I'm sure you know there are some equipment cards that make this effect even better. Basilisk Collar and Grafted Exoskeleton are the ones I prefer, however, there are more cards out there. Red has a variety of ways to tutor for artifacts. Some I have chosen to us are Hoarding Dragon and Godo, Bandit Warlord. Even though they are high in mana cost there are many ways to cheat these cards into play. Sneak Attack and Feldon of the Third Path are just a few at your disposal.

Finally her third ability, this what really makes her stand out. It is a continuous board wipe that can combo to win you the game. Yes the activation cost is expensive but this deck has ways to keep its mana on course and cards like Mana Geyser and Seething Song to give big boosts. However, the best thing about her third effect is that it can be a potential game ender. Repercussion is an obvious win-con if your opponents have 7 or more creatures out. Again Grafted Exoskeleton can end the game quicker with all players getting poison counters at the same time.

The only drawback to her abilities is cost to discard a card for each use. To get around this the deck employees 3 strategies.

1: Use cards that like to be in the grave such as Anger. 2: Use cards that can refill your hand, like Wheel of Fortune and Squee, Goblin Nabob. 3: Use cards that keep drawing cards, such as Howling Mine and Loreseeker's Stone.

I really enjoy playing with this deck. It plays as a strong control build which is something red doesn't do too often. I would encourage players to give it a try if they are considering a control deck or a mono red one.
