Hello hello and welcome to another round of homebrews! Today we have another take on the UG ramp decks that have been growing in popularity on the fringes of Standard. First it was Ramp into Newlamog and Ugin. Then came Ramp into the Waterveil. Those were both great ideas. So why not combine them? Ugin, Waterveil, and Newlamog are a pretty decent top end, but my choices were a little limited. I happened to pull a foil Newlamog and an Ugin, so those are both 1-ofs.
I wanted to go bigger though. Infinite Obliterations are lurking about and hitting one big creature would be a problem. I'm a huge fan of X spells, especially Villainous Wealth. Granted, it was a lot more fun before Zendikar, when a mono-green devotion shell was able to pump out 20-30 mana no problem. Today's Standard is a little slower, but it'd be a shame to let all that Wealth fall by the wayside.
I've seen the builds that use mana dorks and Kiora to ramp...I hate them. Removal is everywhere and having your Rattleclaws eat a Wild Slash before you can unmorph it makes for some bad feelz. I prefer to use ramp spells like Explosive Veggies and Nissa's Renewal. Putting lands on the battlefield is much more resilient, as LD is nearly non-existant. Even facing another Newlamog isn't scary, as I run enough black sources to withstand the exile 2 permanents trigger.
This build has gone through a couple of versions. It started out 4 Color, splashing white for Secure the Wastes and Sorin. Shooting off a big EOT StW was backbreaking, but also stretched my mana base. I dropped the white and went heavy into black, running Crux and Ob Nixilis. That was okay too, but then black became less of a splash and more of a monsoon. So I've streamlined it down to UG with a splash for Wealth. People expect to see Ugin and Newlamog. People DON'T expect to have you play their deck for them.
So to my enemies, jam those Jaces! Get those Gideons! Dig through Time? I'll take all of them! Give me your Rhinos, your Rocs, your Wardens, your Otujais and Silumgars.
