Creature (3)

If you're like me then you probably really miss seeing Siege Rhino in standard. This deck looks to re-live some of the awesome things about Abzan from the Khans block, in a Gruul deck.

The general idea with this deck is to provide substantial mid game strength to close out games, using a creature package that primarily focuses on playing Steel Leaf Champion into Ghalta, Primal Hunger. These two cards alone demand immediate responses from your opponent. Much lower on the curve we have the format staple Llanowar Elves and Servant of the Conduit. Both are excellent ramp cards and Servant of the Conduit specifically helps us color fix. Speaking of colors, the deck runs mostly Green, splashing Red in a few spots.

For the splash color, Red, I've included a couple of great removal spells, Abrade and Lightning Strike. Heroic Intervention and Blossoming Defense are awesome ways to protect our mid game cards before we get to Ghalta, Primal Hunger. Thrashing Brontodon and Ripjaw Raptor are two great creatures, the first for utility and the second for defense and combat.

While Ghalta, Primal Hunger is truly a Green creature, with no lifegain or lifedrain to speak of (like Siege Rhino), I am very happy with the way this deck has come together and performs. We'll see what happens with Standard rotation in the Fall, but for now this is a great G/B deck.
