This is what happens when you have a
Whip of Erebos
and an
Abyssal Persecutor
on the field together. It's not a pretty sight for your opponent
Anyways, hello everyone and welcome my Mono-Black Devotion deck! I've always loved mono-black, but multicolor decks have always been stronger than monocolor; to the point of being unmatched. However, multicolor deck's reign ended the day they printed Gray merchant of asphodel. As soon as I saw Gary (as we lovingly call him), I immediately wanted to make a deck that was focused on him and rewarded me for playing my favorite color. Because of that, this deck was born. The focus is to beat your opponent down with
Geralf's Messenger
and
Abyssal Persecutor
while keeping the field clear with the plethora of removal spells in the deck. Once the board is in your favor you can cripple an opponent with a
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
. And don't worry if
Abyssal Persecutor
sticks around,
Grafted Wargear
,
Victim of Night
, and
Geth's Verdict
will make sure he doesn't stay long enough to ruin the party.
Spell explanations
Victim of Night
- In a mono black deck, Victim of night is possibly your most efficient kill spell. The reason for this is because #1, you're mono black so the casting cost won't be a problem and #2, vampires and zombies are usually black anyway, but this can hit demons.
Geth's Verdict
- Probably the best verdict/edict,
Geth's Verdict
is a great way to get around those pesky keywords such as indestructible, protection, shroud and hexproof.
Grafted Wargear
- This card is awesome. Its power up is certainly worth the cost, and because its an equipment, it sticks around. This thing is more efficient than about 80% of the enchantments that don't stick around! And, To put the proverbial icing on this cake; It can kill your abyssal persecutor as well.
Geralf's Messenger
- There are an incredible amount of fantastic 3 drops in black. Between
Vampire Nighthawk
,
Gatekeeper of Malakir
,
Herald of Torment
and this lovely guy, making the choice of which one would hold my 3cmc creature spot was incredibly hard. Nevertheless, this guy just simply beat the others out. He is just so much more valuable against so many different match-ups. The others couldn't compete.
Hand of Cruelty
- pointing your middle finger at white has never been more efficient. Although I use him more as a devotion gaining wall, the
Hand of Cruelty
is my personal choice of two drop. (Yes, i know pack rat is better, but I cant stand that card). The reason I have the hand and not black knight is pretty simple. Black knight is great when equipped, but alone he cant take out 3 toughness foes like
Kird Ape
alone.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
- If any of you played theros standard, you know that this bad boy IS black devotion. If you run black devotion, you run this.
Abyssal Persecutor
- he's big, he's bad, and he's awesome. With a unique and flavorful drawback; Abyssal persecutor is a fantastically powerful beatstick.
Duress
- Knowledge is power, and getting early knowledge on your opponent's deck gives you a massive advantage. This card also allows you to get rid of things black usually cannot deal with; nipping the threat at the bud.
Whip of Erebos
- You get some lifelink and YOU get some lifelink and YOU get some lifelink! With a powerful static ability and an active graveyard recursion ability, the whip is a valuable addition to any black deck.
Underworld Connections
- because card advantage
Sideboard
Nihil Spellbomb
- hoses self-mill and anything that can come from a fully stocked graveyard. It is fantastically cheap graveyard hate plain and simple. I recently changed out
Tormod's Crypt
for this, because getting graveyard hate that also replaces itself is a solid bargain.
Pithing Needle
- pwns planeswalkers like no one's business. This card is a great card that can easily shut down some of the more nasty combos you might face off against.
Bile Blight
- a fantastically cheap answer to creatures with indestructible with the added bonus of being a psuedo-boardwipe against token armies. This card is great against decks that run out the same card quickly ex
Burning-Tree Emissary
and is your best defense against those damn
Pack Rat
s.
Pharika's Cure
- the proper response to fighting red deck wins.
Sadistic Sacrament
- Combo decks suck to face up against. They suck a lot less to face up against if you can rip the combo right out of the player's deck. This card can do that, and that is a beautiful thing.
Any other feedback I can get for deck improvements would be much appreciated!
Special note! When I first built this deck, Geralf's messenger was only 1.75. His value has steadily increased over time. This deck is marked budget, and if he's a bit too expensive to have a set of four, there are many other viable 3 drops in black to choose from.
In that same fashion, I have avoided other better but more expensive options for this deck so that it can meet the budget tag. Here are some common examples
Abyssal Persecutor
-->
Phyrexian Obliterator
,
Duress
-->
Inquisition of Kozilek
,
Underworld Connections
-->
Phyrexian Arena
P.S. I do not own the arkwork shown in this deck list. It is owned by Middle earth enterprises, Fantasy flight games, and Magali Villeneuve.
