Sideboard

Maybeboard

Creature (2)

Enchantment (1)

A fun, relatively budget (now that Lyra is US$16 or US$17) deck I made for my LGS's FMN modern. The main goal is to get my 4 or 5 cmc Angels out by turns 3 or 4, and then starting pounding them to the ground.

My current sideboard is just a put in until I can trade some cards to make a real sideboard, which I have listed in my update called Sideboard Stuff

  • Rest in Peace is good against reanimator, Snapcaster and Dredge. If I needed this in, I would take out Nature's Spiral as that with Rest in Peace does nothing as all my graveyard stuff is exiled.

  • Karn, Scion of Urza is good against control matchups and if he isn't countered/removed, he could pose a very credible threat, as you are pretty much drawing two cards per turn, no matter what. I didn't put him in my maindeck as he was too slow. If I had to put him in, I would probably put him in for an Oketra's Monument as the games will be slow anyway.

  • Thalia, Heretic Cathar. I like her because she is good against Dredge, Bogle(10% or the time), and aggro for two reasons: She has First Strike and she makes opposing creatures ETB tapped as well as shocklands fecthlands etc.

  • Blessed Alliance. I like any cards with choices, you can do this or that as you can do sooo much with them and they are very versatile. Which is what I am looking for in a sideboard. I really like Alliance as it can surprise your opponent, get past hexproof, make them sac their Bogle, make to creatures have vigilance without having it for a turn and can help my Resplendent Angel.

  • Ghostly Prison is another sideboard card for aggro and it also helps against Tokens/Soul Sisters etc. I'm not sure what I'll take out for it though, maybe some of the higher cmc stuff.

  • Aegis of the Gods is another Shalai, Voice of Plenty but cheaper and more vulnerable to removal. It is good against Burn and Cruel Control. I'll take out an Aerial Responder to put this in.

Win toss, go second.

Opening Hand: 3 basic lands in any combo that has at least one of each colour, Oketra's Monument, Llanowar Elves or Avacyn's Pilgrim, and any two Angels.

T1: Draw a card(random angel or creature). Forest, Llanowar Elves or Avacyn's Pilgrim.

T2: Draw a card(if I only have a single Plains in my starting hand, then one here). Plains, Oketra's Monument.

T3: Draw a card(doesn't really matter). Plains, anyone of my Angels, getting a 1/1 Warrior with vigilance.

As you can see, if I get a draw like this, it will be pretty hard to combat this onslaught of Angels, especially if you have something like Always Watching .

Here is the decklist I currently use for playtesting so I can publish it here:

Thanks for having a look. Suggestions always welcome.

After lots of playtesting, I have decided that I'll probably want some sort of reanimation, as the deck has a tendency to run out of steam if you kill the key guys. Also, I felt that if I couldn't remove the opponent's flyers for my own flyers to get through, then I was pretty much doomed to die a slow death. I have also been given one of my dad's old Birds of Paradise, which will be useful.
