I'm trying to make four-color control competitive in the current standard environment. I tried using BUG as the base to take advantage of Garruk, the primal hunter, Thragtusk, Prime Speaker Zegana, and Farseek for ramp-- however, the deck's removal was clunky and usually left me without a creature to put counters on Zegana.
I splashed white in the BUG deck for Sphinx's Revelation and Obzedaddy only to realize that white has several great sideboard options, like
Detention Sphere
, Rest in Peace, and Blind Obedience.
But having green in the deck just didn't add enough power and controlish elements that I was looking for to combat the crazy aggro decks and all the Esper/American control decks out there. Not to mention I couldn't remove Planeswalkers easily either.
This deck's base is obviously Grixis (hence the obnoxious title). I loved the idea of having
Rakdos's Return
and Dreadbore mainboard to deal directly with both control and aggro matchups.
I also love Liliana of the Dark Realms, even if all the other haters gonna hate. Her mana-fixing ability helps me run four colors comfortably, her -3 ability lets me gain a bunch of life with my Nighthawks or have a spot-removal Mutilate. And her ultimate, her glorious ultimate, lets me Sphinx or Return for a million! Not to mention that you can Sphinx for 8 with two swamps at the end of your opponents turn and then play most of the cards you get if you tap the rest of your mana right on yours.
I feel that this deck can contend with most of the decks out there in the standard environment. I do feel the need to improve the sideboard but am out of ideas. I've tested this deck against Boros aggro, Naya humans, Jund aggro, Jund control, Esper control, American flash, a whole bunch of midrange, and even a mill deck: it won more games than it lost consistently, since it has so many answers to both control and aggro in the mainboard.
Since I am new to magic (just started last summer), any critiques or comments on this deck would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for stopping by.
