Hello everyone!
Long story short, I want recommendations on what deck should I try to build in modern.Ofc, constructive criticism for this decklist is also welcome.
Short story:
I know this deck isn't good, but I think it shows some of what I consider my playstyle: control-ish, yet also proactive, happily in mid-range with a tendency to like "unanswerable threats", either by a card itself or a synergy. I also like white in general. What deck should I consider playing in modern that fits my playstyle?
Long story:
I'm here looking for help on what kind of deck should I be seeking to play for a modern format. To be honest, I was inspired to post my decklist in hopes I could recycle some cards from my old Theros decklist, to start creating a modern semi-competitive semi-casual/budget deck... of course, as I scrambled through the internet searching for the cards I had and their supposed "usage" in modern, I quickly found out I was way too casual for the format and my cards are nowhere near as good as I thaught they were way back when I did well at FNM's. While I was supposedly searching for possible decks that contained at least some cards I had, I ended up reading a whole bunch of the decklists that represent the metagame in modern, alongside analysis of them and how their gameplan's executed. I was thrilled. I've never considered myself a bad mtg player, altho I have to admit I was way too concentrated on my playgroup's meta when I was deckbuilding.
The idea of the present decklist was to have some control and presence over the field until I could play a significant threat, most of the time in the form of an heroic creature on the board with protection magic ready, which would both help my creature stick and gain power through the heroic mechanic. Fabled Hero was the all-star of my quick wins and combat tricks, sometimes enough stalling until I could sweep a board leaving my fleecemane's alive sealed the deal, and sometimes it was just a matter of my opponents not being able to answer Spectra Ward, but to be honest, in retrospective, I'm surprised I won as much as I did. I know the deck is full of weaknesses and casualness, as I also included singletons (which I know isn't the best case for a lot of them) and overall inefficient cards, in order to fulfill my wishes of having a "strong", "creative" and "themed" deck, and because I overvalued some synergies. I also liked the idea of having Ajani, Elspeth and Brimaz as singletons, honestly because I loved them both as characters and cards and liked the idea of respecting their legendary status, but I must admit it was also because of budget (at that time).
The whole point is, though I know this decklist is seriously flawed, I think it also showcases the type of player that I am (and no, not as in a bad player). I mean it has some control, much more mid-late game than early game, and the recurrent theme of "unanswerable threats", or at least that's what I like to think. All of these things point towards a control-ish type of play, but I'm not exactly a fan of draw-go decks, or solely reactive decks. I also like to be proactive, to pack some surprises, and to do some neat synergies, as pretty much all of us do. So I was wondering, what type of deck should I try for modern that fits my playstyle? It doesn't have to be one of the best decks in the format, just a fairly competitive one that would at least give me a chance to win against other modern decks. It also doesn't have to be GW, altho I would appreciate some white as I think it fits my playstyle and I honestly like it. Last thing to say, I definitely do not enjoy pure-aggro, for me controlling>racing. I had thought of something like a geist of saint traft controlish bant, but tbh I'm clueless.
Thanks to all of you that read till the end.
