Black Reanimator Deck: Hadal Depths 5.0

This is a deck that I come up with in a rather strange way since I didn´t plan it at all. During Xmas Eve the owner from the store from where I buy and play Magic decided come up with a surprise tournament for mono black decks only, and since I didn´t had any black deck I just went trough my and a friend collection chose a bunch of black cards join them together and ended up with this deck. I lost the first game because the ratio of the cards were a bit of, but after some minor adjustments I went in a winning ride, and ended up in second place in that tournament with 12 wins, and 4 loses with a deck put together in 15 minutes. So I used the money I got from the prize to buy the cards my friend lent me, and made this deck mine. Hope everyone has fun with it and leave suggestions if you think they can improve this deck.


Current Combos:

  • Dark Depths + Vampire Hexmage just use Vampire Hexmage ability to remove all the counters from Dark Depths and summon Marit Lage.
  • Dark Ritual + Entomb + Unearth / Dark Ritual + Entomb + Reanimate ( + Swamp ) this combos main purpose is to get Vampire Hexmage into the battlefield as soon as possible if you didn't draw one on your first hand.
  • Dark Ritual + Expedition Map ( + Swamp ) this combo main purpose is to get Dark Depths into your hand to make you able to place it battlefield as soon as possible if you didn't draw one on your first hand.
  • Bloodghast + Buried Alive + Dark Ritual You can use Buried Alive to send 3xBloodghast from the library to the graveyard and next just play a land to bring them from the graveyard to the battlefield.
  • Platinum Emperion + Reanimate you can either use Reanimate to bring Platinum Emperion from the graveyard to battlefield without paying its converted mana cost in life or if Platinum Emperion is already on the field bring others creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield with Reanimate without paying their converted mana cost in life.
  • Dark Ritual + Entomb + Reanimate / Buried Alive + Dark Ritual + Reanimate these combos were made to work with the all of the creatures of this deck in the following ways:
    • Avatar of Discord to use its ability of discard 2 cards in your hand if you have cards that you can't cast on it and also as a cheap 5/3 attacker with flying.
    • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite for its ability to decrease the power of my opponent creatures and shut down bears, low toughness tokens and weenie decks as well as the capability to power up my own creatures.
    • Inkwell Leviathan it's combination of abilities make Inkwell Leviathan a very hard card to remove from the battlefield and a great counter against most of decks.
    • Iona, Shield of Emeria for its ability to completely shut down a colour and this way either render useless any kind of counter measures that a colour ( mainly , and ) could use against this deck or working as a wining condition against most mono-coloured decks by completely shutting down their ability to cast any card.
    • Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur for its ability to let you draw seven cards at the end step of your turn and also for its ability reduce the hand size of your opponent to 0 and this way keeping them under control and removing any problem they could cause you during your turns.
    • Platinum Emperion for its ability freeze your life total that makes it a great card to combo with Reanimate as it removes is draw back as well as a way temporary delay games if your opponent is unable to remove it.
    • Sheoldred, Whispering One that has an ability that will work as a free Unearth or Reanimate once a turn with no negative side effects. Its second ability is also very helpful as it makes your opponent sacrifice a creature every turn. This is a good stalling ability on early turns to hold your opponent down for enough time for you to build your winning condition.
    • Terastodon to use its ability to remove up to three target noncreature permanents that can be used to stall your opponent by removing is lands or any problematic enchantments or artifacts on the battlefield.
      • Terastodon ability work the same way as cast 3xBeast Within, the only difference is that your are not able to target creatures with it.
    • Urabrask the Hidden for its ability to support my creatures by giving them haste to accelerate how fast they can used and make my opponents creatures come into the battlefield tapped delaying they use for a turn.
    • Vampire Hexmage to use its ability of remove all the counters from Dark Depths to summon Marit Lage or kill opposing Planeswalkers.
    • Visara the Dreadful for its ability to kill a creature simply by it.
      • This ability is even more helpful on the combo Sheoldred, Whispering One + Visara the Dreadful that as the potential to kill one of your opponent's creature every turn turning the battlefield ambient very hostile for them.
      • This ability to kill a creature every turn can also be used as fuel to Tragic Slip second ability for even greater creature annihilation.
    • Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger for its ability to double the amount of mana my lands can produce as well as delaying by one turn the step of any land my opponent uses to produce mana.

This is all the cards that were on the deck at some point but were removed. They may be included again if needed.


Deck main Weaknesses:

  1. Cards that can counter your spells at anny time by a low mana price.
  2. Cards that can stop you from search cards in your Library.
  3. Cards that can stop you from place cards in your graveyard.
  4. Cards that can exile some / all cards from your graveyard.
  5. Cards that can stop you from cast cards from your Graveyard.
  6. Cards that can Exile your main creatures at anny time by a low mana price.
  7. Cards that force you return your main creatures to your hand.
  8. Cards that can stop your creatures from attack under certain conditions.
  9. Other black / reanimator deck that can cast the creatures in your graveyard.

Updates Add

With the deck now working to my liking, was now time to think about the sideboard. Since I already filled 10 of 15 spots on the sideboard with cards to support some of the functions or creatures of the main deck I decided use the remaining 5 spots to include 5 extra individual creatures that work well with the reanimator mechanics of this deck that will work as specific counters to certain kinds of decks or supporters / booster to their own deck. This gave me unique opportunity to finally achieve a goal that I was not able to reach so far of create a deck with all the five Praetors ( one the two creature types I like the most the other one been Myr ) in it, and as two of them are already on the main deck ( Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and Sheoldred, Whispering One ) I only need to add the other three and will still be left with 2 more free spots to add other two creatures.

Creatures added and reason:

  • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to work as a booster to my creatures as well as a counter against bears, low toughness tokens and weenie decks.
  • Inkwell Leviathan its shroud ability and 11 toughness makes it incredible difficult card to remove from the battlefield and thanks to its islandwalk and shroud ability makes it a great card to use against most of kinds of decks.
  • Terastodon to remove annoying noncreature permanents from the battlefield.
  • Urabrask the Hidden to support my creatures by giving them haste so that I can use them faster and make my opponents creatures come into the battlefield tapped delaying them for a turn.
  • Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger to double the amount of mana my lands produce and delay for one turn the step of any land my opponent uses to produce mana.

Also after some tests I noticed that Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger second ability work great with this deck by greatly delaying my opponents mana producing capabilities when I'm able to get him on the battlefield in the first or second turn so I decided move him to the main deck and to make space for him I will move Visara the Dreadful to the sideboard as she is more of a support creature and removing her will not affect much the way the deck works.
