Sideboard

idk what i'm doing tbh

Ohhhhh man. I had a tough time trying to get over the loss of Sphinx's Revelation. Now that Elspeth, Sun's Champion is gone I'm lost. I've been bouncing between this and Esper Dragons since Origins was released.

I'll admit that right now it's not very strong compared to Esper Dragons. Control players that aren't playing dragons are on the hunt for a decent finisher. I think that the Awaken mechanic is pretty weak and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is our only chance until Oath to Gatewatch. The Thopter theme isn't as reliable since Darksteel Citadel rotated; Hangarback is fine but I think we'd rather be holding up mana on turns 2-4 for spells or Jace. Finally, Mage-Ring Esper is too much of a "do nothing and hope Ugin resolves but I might be dead by then" deck.

I decided to try this brew because of the utility Red provides. It's Jeskai Black with more control elements and less creatures.

A Sideboard guide will be up when I win more events with this deck.

Sooooo I have been bouncing between U/w and Esper Dragons since I played Jeff Hoogland's Thopter control. Now that cards like Last Breath, Nyx-Fleece Ram, and Elspeth, Sun's Champion are gone, Dragons seems like the obvious answer to consistently close out games!

I decided to handicap myself and remove all the Artifact synergy and decided to play the list above. I'm obviously going to make a couple changes moving forward.

Round 1 vs. Abzan Aristocrats
Game 1 LOSS - So yeah, Zulaport Cutthroat is pretty strong. This game was tough. I couldn't boardwipe for value because of Blisterpod and Hangarback Walker. He also had Nantuko Husk for a finisher and a way to dodge removal.
Game 2 LOSS - I didn't expect Collected Companyfoil when he was clearly playing Rally the Ancestors. He also boarded in Evolutionary Leap. I just got out-resourced.

Round 2 vs R/G Landfall
Game 1 LOSS - Didn't draw a single boardwipe or Stasis Snare.
Game 2 WIN - Ojutai's Command + Arashin Cleric is pretty good. This game took a long time. I had to keep myself alive and avoid going to anything close to 4 life because of Exquisite Firecraft. We had 7 minutes left for game 3.
Game 3 DRAW - Honestly I just had to survive and get the draw. I stalled long enough and in a crucial moment he decides to pump his dude with Titan's Strength, Temur Battle Rage, and Become Immense. I had the Stasis Snare waiting for him to do that all game. We ended up drawing after we passed a couple turns and he wasn't drawing another creature.

Round 3 vs Abzan Aggro
Game 1 WIN - Fleecemane Lion is no longer here! Abzan Aggro is a little easier to deal with now. My opponent's list played a little heavier on the 4 and 5 drops with Sorin, Solemn Visitor and Wingmate Roc. Stasis Snare is so good against Abzan. I'm glad he didn't play Ob Nixilis Reignited as I only have 2 cards to deal with that if it resolves.
Game 2 WIN - This matchup becomes easier post board. The single Radiant Purge and Dispel from sideboard helped against Valorous Stance and Dromoka's Command. I think he left in command because of my Jace and Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper.

Round 4 vs W/B Warriors
Game 1 and 2 WIN BY CONCESSION - This matchup is even harder than Abzan Aristocrats. Zulaport Cutthroat finds allies in Bloodsoaked Champion, Brutal Hordechief and Retreat to Emeria. All these cards are super good against control. He decided to concede to me since I was paired down this round. He was already at 2 losses and I had a decent shot at Top 8.

Round 5 vs G/R Elemental Roil
Game 1 WIN - Even after all of his Rampant Growth effects to thin his deck, he couldn't resolve Omnath, Locus of Rage. His whole strategy involved Zendikar's Roil, Evolutionary Leap, and Omnath to damage his opponent. It's almost like Aristocrats but much slower and can go over the top of other decks. He had a bunch of mana on board but nothing big to resolve. Jace was milling him at this point.
Game 2 WIN - He mulled to 6 and as soon as he missed land 3 I knew it was over. Jace was going to get to ulti soon and all I had to do was counter his Rampant Growth spells and killed his mana ramp creatures. I wasn't worried about not being able to counter Omnath or Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip. He couldn't cast them in time anyway. He conceded when I resolved an Emeria Shepherd and discarded Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to a 2nd Jace and brought back Ugin with Landfall.

Top 4 Split My friend conceded to me in Top 8 and we split my earning for placing in Top 4.

So moving forward I would take out Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper. He might be good with Jeskai Ascendancy though. But in this deck he's just too awkward and clunky to use. What's cool though is that you can target the same land and make it a 12/12 if you wanted to. I would just play one extra Quarantine Field and another counter like Disdainful Stroke in his two spots. I also realized that this is the hardest control archetype to play because of it's lack of a catch-all removal spell like Utter End. I might play Esper for Week 2 after some more testing.
