Homie Don't Play That (Baral ~$60 EDH)

Commander / EDH Budget Control Mono-Blue Tokens

EpicNinjaKing21

Do you like blue? Do you want to be able to somewhat keep up with competitive decks without breaking the bank? Do you find yourself having the most fun when no one else is? Do you generally enjoy being a piece of trash with no friends?

If so, Baral, Chief of Compliance is the commander for you!

But why would I want to play Baral?

Well, I'm glad you asked! Playing Baral might be for you if:

  • You enjoy controlling the board with lots of counterspells
  • You're big into token creation
  • You don't want to break the bank
  • You don't have friends (or at least friends you're willing to lose)
  • You take pain from the suffering of others
  • You're great at bluffing
However, some people might not enjoy playing mono-blue, and that's okay. Playing Baral might not be for you if:
  • You prefer that all games be over by turn four
  • You're can't stand your battlefield being cluttered with tokens
  • You want an expensive, highly competitive deck that can wreck face
  • You are a good person
  • Your poker face sucks

Still here? Good. Let's move on to the strategy.

The Strategy

Baral's strategy is really quite simple. Your goal is to make sure that none of your opponent's win conditions can hit the battlefield through the use of heavy counter-magic. At your earliest convenience, you want to play down either Metallurgic Summonings, Talrand, Sky Summoner, Lullmage Mentor, or Docent of Perfection  . This will allow you to slowly amass an army while keeping the board relatively under control. Fair warning though, you always want to keep mana open for a counterspell (even if you don't have one). Another part to the deck is the mind games you play with your opponent, as they struggle to figure out whether or not you're holding the counter to that precious win condition.

However, be careful not to counter too many things. You only have a limited amount, and it would be a shame if your opponent actually got to play that turn four Blightsteel Colossus. Therefore, I have assembled this handy primer, just in case.

You should counter a spell if:

  • The spell in question is targeting an integral part of your strategy
  • The spell in question will win your opponent the game
  • The spell in question will lose you the game
  • The spell in question is an integral part to an infinite combo
  • Countering the spell in question would gain you a temporary ally
You should think about holding your counterspell if:
  • The spell in question is targeting an unimportant part of your strategy
  • The spell in question is simply to save their skin
  • The spell in question will help you
  • The spell in question just counters one of your counters (unless of course the spell you were countering will win them the game)
  • The spell in question doesn't affect you, and has no potential to gain you an ally
This isn't the definitive guide for counterspells, but it is a good rule of thumb to think about how a spell affects you or the game. Your job is to control the game, and make sure no one is more powerful than you, so keep that in mind before you counter.

With all that said, I hope you have fun playing Baral, Chief of Compliance EDH.

You sick bastard, you.
