Horde Magic (Suggested) Ban List

Unknown* Horde Magic

OptimalGreen

This is the ban list created by the creator of Horde Magic Peter Knudson. He hasn't updated it since 2011 so I've taken upon myself to maintain this list and add any new cards with similar effects as the ones on this list and archive it in case the site this list was posted on ever goes down. These cards are more "suggestions" of what not to run against Horde Decks as there's no hard set rules unlike sanctioned formats and much like Commander's "rule 0" it's up to individual playgroups. Me and my friends have played cards such as Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite against hordes such as goblin ones before and while a hilarious mental image of goblins splatting on the ground upon being summoned reduced the game into a non-game. Again take it as a suggestion and not a hard rule but I highly recommend following this. Also taking any suggestions on cards released post-2011 that share similar effects as these cards.

Homebrew Rules:

  1. All "banned" cards that are in player's decks and were either forgotten about, didn't have a replacement on hand, or didn't want to desleeve and resleeve the card and another one for a game variant have "Cycling 1".

  2. For the sake of cards like Biowaste Blob, Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar, and Anara, Wolvid Familiar I've come up with a rule based on the World of Warcraft TCG Raid Decks that Horde was inspired by where they had unique cards in them that were "raid" bosses Horde Decks can have "Commanders" for the sake of cards that might need them in play. I've also homebrewed it so the legendary rule from way back in the early days of Magic applies to these "Commanders" and that there can only be one of each within a deck. Commanders are also in the deck like every other spell and are played normally like any other spell in the deck so there is no command zone for them to be cast from or go back to once they die or get exiled.

  3. The horde does not lose if it receives 10 infect counters. Instead on it's upkeep the horde will mill one card per infect counter. So for example if the horde has 10 infect counters than it will mill 10 on it's upkeep before it can cast anything.
