Sideboard

Maybeboard

This is my most competitive deck while still maintaining a gimmick.

Is Elemental my favorite creature type? Maybe. Did I get jealous of other colors having all the cool Elementals after playing Mono-red Ashling? Yes.

Five colors? Am I insane? Most definitely.

Sideboard is cut cards. Maybeboard is maybeboard.

Some cards that I've rotated out of this deck and my reasoning:

  • Undergrowth Champion: idk he can get big if played early, but loses counters when he gets chumped. Also he's vanilla. not much impact on the battlefield.
  • Roil Elemental: dies to the wind, but can be good if paired with a sac outlet, I suppose. You want to play it on turn 6 so you can play a land after. Might actually try it again, but 3 blue can be hard to cast without relic or world tree.
  • Silvos, Rogue Elemental: idk he's good actually. 3 green is doable in this deck, and regeneration is nice to swing with no fear. Guess I was moving away from competitive into jank/combo
  • Counterflux: This deck doesn't want to hold 3 up for countering, as much as I like this card
  • Woodland Wanderer: vigilance and trample on a 6/6 is decent, but other than that he's not very disruptive. Also when he comes back from the yard he doesn't get counters.
  • Crime // Punishment: Very spicy, but there are plenty of effects that do punishment and I find Praetor's Grasp more fun than Crime
  • Spawnwrithe: You will never duplicate spawnwrithe.
  • Wispmare, Ingot Chewer: supplanted by Foundation Breaker.
  • Mirror Entity: meh. not flavorful.
  • Whisperwood Elemental: I do like the sac ability, and it makes a 2/2 every turn, but I found it mostly just blanked what I wanted in my hand.
  • Void Stalker: There's plenty of other removal that exiles in here, and you can't get stalker back with Horde.
  • Wrath of God: Replaced by Damn.
  • Bloom Tender: As really, really nice as Bloom Tender is and as explosive as games can be with her, she's not an elemental. This is kind of a 75% deck, with one of the restrictions being all elementals and the other being lots of taplands.

While I'm at it, in general, the house rules of the groups I usually play in include not playing Cyclonic Rift, and I don't usually pay tax cards (Rhystic, etc) since they're annoying.

  • Bring to Light: This card is really cool, but it just kind of overstayed its welcome for me. I dunno, it might go back in.
  • Sunforger: Again, like the card, but it overstayed its welcome and this deck now has enough removal in the form of creatures that I don't feel the need to play a slow card like Sunforger. It really belongs in an equipment deck.
  • Door of Destinies: Idk, Door never felt conducive to the game I needed to play. I never had time to cast it. Maybe if it cost 3?
  • Obsidian Fireheart: Love the card, but never made that much of an impact
  • Fertilid: Sloooooooow
  • Flickerwisp: I like Venser a bit more, because without another creature on board, Flickerwisp doesn't do much.

I guess Vivien's Arkbow is my flex/fun slot

Updates Add

This update focuses the deck on ETB/evoke and adds flicker enablers. The deck is moving away from dropping a fun elemental or two a turn to one that's more reactive and toolbox-y, slightly quicker to ramp, and can use sac outlets and Jegantha/Lotus to trigger an elemental 2-3 times in a turn.

This deck wins by toolboxing out elementals to take care of threats, and then beating down with Horde and whatever elementals are still laying around.

I explicitly am not including any infinite combos/infinite mana in this deck, as they're not really fun imo.

Important to note that adventures can be cast from the GY with Horde.

OUT:

  • Elemental lands: I never use em and they slow me down. Changed to Surveil lands.
  • Avenger of Zendikar, Big Omnath: I think the lands matter version of Horde wants these. But not this version. Also, they're really, really expensive.
  • Coalition Relic
  • Crackling Doom
  • Damn
  • Demonic Tutor: I think the one I have is fake.
  • Evolutionary Leap: Out for Greater Good.
  • Flamekin Herald: Just not where I want to be. Doesn't do anything on ETB.
  • Greenwarden of Murasa: 6 mana for a vanilla do-nothing? No thanks
  • Illuna: Oops can't mutate with horde
  • Lifecrafter's Bestiary: Out for Tribute to the World Tree
  • Lightning Skelemental: Fun elemental I put in cuz fun, but there are better options
  • Living Lightning: Hard cut, but it just seems like I don't have enough instants and sorceries
  • Other Omnath: Not a landfall deck.
  • Parcelbeast: Too slow, this deck wants Risen Reef and Risen Reef only
  • Phy Arena: Focusing on ETB effects, evoke and sac to draw
  • Praetor's Grasp: My fun-of for years, gone
  • Primal Beyond: Secluded Courtyard is strictly better
  • Roil Elemental: Not a landfall deck. Also, 3UUU? hell nah
  • Skullclamp: Hard cut, could be good.
  • Song of Creation: Fun but prolly not what this deck wants
  • Steely Resolve: Need to flicker, so this is out
  • Sultai Charm: Idk, wasn't vibing
  • Thornling: Doesn't etb and you have to keep mana up. Not what this deck wants to do.
  • Thryx, the Sudden Storm: Not a lot of hits for this ability
  • Torrent Elemental: Feels very meh, but I'm sure I just never got to see this card's full potential.
  • Utter End: PL reduction
  • Venser, the Sojourner: Into Teleportation Circle
  • Vivien's Arkbow: We have better ways to discard

IN:

  • Arcane Signet: Curve reduction.
  • Beza, the Bounding Spring: Testing, but a lower cost Elemental with some good ETBs.
  • Bramble Familiar: A dork + discard outlet + late-game panic button? It's everything this deck wants!
  • Cavalier of Dawn, Night: Feels clunkkyyyyyy due to WWW and BBB costs, but very very good ETBs and Dawn can return artifacts and enchantments, which has done well in playtesting if Lotus gets targeted.
  • Commercial District: See above
  • Endurance: For the complete set, not that I'd use it on myself. Mostly for GY hate but a flash blocker for cheap is cool too
  • Ephemerate: Feelsbadman playing a 1-mana spell in commander but it's good
  • Expedition Map: I really feel like I need a ton of ramp/consistency in this deck.
  • Fact or Fiction: Card draw and GY fuel
  • Flickerwisp: Moving to a flicker focus.
  • Greater Good: This card is bonkers with Horde. Sac and then revive to churn through the deck
  • [unsure] Life / Death: Kinda flex slot, Might turn this into something else, like Journey to Eternity
  • Maha, Its Feathers Night: Combos with Night Incarnate for a board wipe. Insanely efficient attacker. Sticky. Very strong
  • Malakir Rebirth: Look mom, I'm playing scam!
  • Nevermaker: Deads an opponent's draw and temporarily removes an indestructible threat. Good tempo.
  • Nova Chaser: Triggers leaves and enters (not dies tho).
  • Nulldrifter: Why yes mark rosewater I did want a second copy of mulldrifter in my deck (sucks that it's on cast and not etb tho)
  • Phyrexian Reclamation: An absolute HOUSE in this deck man, getting an evoke creature back from the GY makes this deck such a good toolbox. Destroy anything that's giving you problems.
  • Rumbleweed: A little silly, and maybe not good, but on-type Craterhoof is cool and you can build your own OTK with Maelstrom Wanderer
  • Spitebellows: A strict downgrade to reduce power level but promote synergy. Don't @ me
  • Smuggler's Surprise: I want to cut this card but I can't, it does it all. Pseudo heroic intervention, creature draw, and creature cheat, it's busted
  • [unsure] Sword of Hearth and Home: I still have 5 basics so this fixes and flickers. Very close to cutting em all though so this is next on the chopping block.
  • Teleportation Circle: One less than the 5 mana artifact solution, and it only targets creatures which is fine
  • Tempest Hart: Early game card filtering plus an emergency beater? Sure man
  • Three Visits: See arcane signet
  • Timeless Lotus: How could I not?
  • Titan of Industry: Great beater, reanimation target, protects itself or Horde, great all around. Pretty spendy though so it prefers the GY.
  • Tribute to the World Tree: Compromise between Guardian Project and Up the Beanstalk. I HATE enchantments that are more than 3,4 mana. They feel so clunky. Can't explain it
  • Urza's Incubator: Lots of colorless costs to reduce in this deck.
