Commander / EDH

Milkdudnips

Ultra budget challenge with Toshiro Umezawa at the head! The deck does typical black things like killing creatures and reanimating stuff- with a moderate focus on hand stax. Toshiro has plenty of options between flashing back instants, and black's natural reanimating power to take advantage of pitched cards giving him the capability to grind out the long game.

The recurring hand attacks were added due to black's inability to otherwise deal with noncreature permanents. My aim was to build a deck that could play reasonably well at a multiplayer table, based on an extremely restricted budget. After viewing Toshiro's triggered ability I felt he would be a very solid fit for the role, and thus far he has not disappointed. Mono-black has very few recursion elements outside of pure creature recursion, and Toshiro allows the capability to break that barrier (despite being circumstantial) with instants as well. He makes it much easier to run a plethora of "everybody discards" effects (which are the most efficient in multiplayer scenarios) due to the ability to mitigate both creature and instant spell loss, allowing you less worry in pitching otherwise relevant cards.

This deck has multiple routes to taking control of the game after the inevitable top deck war ensues. Some of the best options are having an active Phyrexian reclamation/Palace Siege, giving you the ability to always "draw" at least one (semi) relevant card. Planeswalkers are also an easy way to secure a victory after the soft lock is fully in place. Top deck manipulation is an incredibly large plus.
