You're not going to have fun playing against it, but secretly you're going to like it.
Whole premise of the deck: use Maralen of the Mornsong to get
Dark Sphere
, Glacial Chasm, Ad Nauseam, and Sickening Dreams - cast Ad Nauseam, draw your entire deck, play Sickening Dreams, kill opponents and on the stack sacrifice
Dark Sphere
and/or Glacial Chasm to save yourself for the win. Yes, this deck is definitely a large glass cannon in a large glass house with a small little opening barely big enough to fit the black cannonball.
Optimal Hand and TurnsOPENING HAND: Have at least 3 mana (one being black),
Dark Ritual,
Spellbook,
Dark Sphere
/
Glacial Chasm,
Ad Nauseam /
Sickening Dreams. - You want to have at least SOME form of this opening hand to provide a quicker win that will be harder to interrupt in a multiplayer EDH.
TURN ONE: Play a
Swamp, if
Dark Ritual is in hand, play that to cast
Maralen of the Mornsong : opponents will now start taking damage turn one depending on turn order but will also allow them to start getting their wincons - typically biggest creatures / spells / etc. If you have
Dark Sphere
or another "0"-drop in hand, play it. If you have
Spellbook, play it as soon as possible.
TURN TWO: Use
Maralen of the Mornsong to go get next piece, whether it be
Glacial Chasm or
Dark Sphere
if you did not have either one in hand. If you had either one in hand, go search for
Ad Nauseam or
Sickening Dreams, then play land for turn,
Dark Sphere
, or
Glacial Chasm as your land for turn along with other "0"-drops.
If you have a spell such as Inquisition of Kozilek,
Thoughtseize,
or Duress,
feel free to cast to interrupt opponent(s)' hand(s).TURN THREE: You should now have at least
Maralen of the Mornsong in play, a
Glacial Chasm and/or
Dark Sphere
in play, and either
Sickening Dreams or
Ad Nauseam in hand. Upkeep, pay the cumulative cost for Glaciam Chasm if needed, search for another card with
Maralen of the Mornsong (preferably either
Cabal Ritual or
Culling the Weak if you have another creature out) to help cast
Ad Nauseam. With
Ad Nauseam, you will draw your hand but you will also take a considerable amount of damage. Try to have
Elixir of Immortality out to gain life or another life gain source available.
Another option is depending on your hand, you may not take much damage.
Depending on if you have enough mana, you could cast Sickening Dreams this turn for the win.TURN FOUR: Wincon time. This is the turn that will either make you or break you and cause a draw. With maralen the mornsong go search for something, either something to gain you life or prevent damage to you. You want to have SOMETHING that will offset the amount of damage you take. You will want to play a mana, preferably
Boseiju, Who Shelters All to protect your next spell, any other "0"-drops you have, then cast
Sickening Dreams - discarding the majority of you 80+ card hand. Discard enough to kill everyone swiftly, but make sure you have
Glacial Chasm or
Dark Sphere
in play; want to be safe? Have both out ready to pop on the stack. If
Sickening Dreams does resolve, sit back and watch your opponents be shocked and feel a little violated while you feel triumphant.
One thing I recommend about the deck: don't make this your main EDH deck. The minute people recognize
Maralen of the Mornsong they will target her immediately like most do with
Kaalia of the Vast and
Bruna, Light of Alabaster.
The reason I wanted to build this deck is because I feel as if all my EDH decks are very relaxed, casual, and above all not that threatening. I am tired of being the only one in a competitive game playing a casual deck. I want to build this deck, bring it to my EDH league, and wreck shop one game. Plain and simple.
