This knight cuts through all!
I wanted to build a deck around Knight of the Kitchen Sink A, because I realized it has protection from black-bordered cards, which are the most common cards in the game, by far. I figure that should give me an unfair advantage against anyone playing any standard, black-bordered decks!
Granted, I can only play this casually, with friends who agree to allow me to use silver-bordered cards, an agreement which will likely be revoked after the first game. But, I digress. Let's dig in to the deck, to see what was going through my mind as I built it.
First things first, Knight of the Kitchen Sink A has protection from black-bordered cards, which means that if the opponent has no white-bordered or silver-bordered cards themselves, then the Knight is basically unblockable, indestructible, and even bounce-proof! It can't be blocked, it can safely chump, and it is effectively immune to removal, unless, of course, you're playing someone who's using a sweeper that destroys or exiles, rather than dealing damage. But let's be real: if someone's using cards like that in a "casual" game, then they're kind of a bigger d***he-canoe than me. This is basically an aggressive strategy with an unblockable creature that wants to win the race to damage output.
I've got a full playset of Squadron Hawk to help thin out the deck if I draw into it, and they make decent aerial attackers for that evasive chip damage. They can also be used as discard fodder, since you probably won't need all 4 in one game. Speaking of which, I have Bitter Reunion, Faithless Looting, and Thrilling Discovery to dig through the deck to find the Knight, since tutors aren't budget-friendly, and this is a budget, casual deck. I also use Furycalm Snarl as the only cheap, but effective dual land I could find, and since this is an aggro deck, and it does need a bit of mana fixing due to the necessity of red in the early game for the looting spells, and white later on for the Knight, and the enchantments, I decided to go with these, over something like, say, Wind-Scarred Crag, which gains a life point, but always enters the battlefield tapped. That's just too slow for this deck, which is already kind of a slow deck for an aggro build.
The main idea behind this deck is to obtain, play, and then aggressively attack with Knight of the Kitchen Sink A. All the better if Bitter Reunion is already out on the field, as the Knight can be given Haste to start attacking one turn sooner. But I also have some buff spells added in, which double as mana sinks for those turns when other plays aren't really viable, for one reason or another. Here we have Blessing and Firebreathing, which are both the white-border variants, so they can successfully target Knight of the Kitchen Sink in order to attach to it. And then, they both have an instant-speed ability that allows pumping the Knight to stronger power, so it can get in for more damage! Blood Lust is also a white-border variant, so that it may legally target the Knight, and boost its power by 4 until the end of turn.
For some other choices, I went with 3 copies of Serra's Blessing, as a means of giving my Knight vigilance, so that it may attack aggressively, but then be ready during the opponent's turn to safely block their most powerful creature, as it won't take damage due to the protection ability, as long as the blocked creature isn't white-bordered or silver-bordered. And if they are, the above mentioned enchantments can be used to boost during your opponent's turn to safely block, or even destroy, a creature of theirs in combat. And any extra Serra's Blessings you draw can be used as discard fodder to the many looting spells in this deck. And yes, Serra's Blessing would work on the Knight even if it had a black-border, as it does not target, attach to, nor deal damage to the Knight, but it does not seem as though there is a black-border variant; it can be substituted for a similar black-bordered card, though, without disrupting the strategy.
I also went with 2 copies of Staying Power in this deck, as this makes any of the buffs from the enchantments, and from Blood Lust, permanent as long as it remains on the field! However, I went with only 2 copies, because this can quickly backfire: the opponent also benefits from Staying Power, so any of their buffs will also be permanent. So, it's a bit of a situational card. Which leads to the last card to mention for this deck, which is Burn Down the House. Since it is a black-bordered card, the Knight of the Kitchen Sink A will not take damage from it (though, unfortunately, Squadron Hawk will), so it can be used to clear the board of threats in a pinch. You can also use it to get three Devil tokens which can be chumped and ping the opponent for a little bit extra damage, maybe squeezing out an early win. Again, it's situational, and can be discarded to the many looting effects if it is not needed in the current game context.
It's just a fun little deck I put together with an amazingly mediocre, but still very interesting ability at the heart of it all, the silver-bordered exclusive "Protection from black-borders". I built this because I just wanted to have a bit of fun with the ability, and see what I could come up with! And all for under $20, too! Cool!
