This is my take on Jeskai Burn. It is designed using only post-rotation cards (Tarkir block and Origins) and I kept it quite budget. You could buy the whole deck excluding the Dragonlord Ojutai's for 20 or so. I have the Ojutai's from my esper dragons deck so I figured I would include them as they are so good in each deck.
Before playing this deck, you should know a few things. This deck can be played in so many ways depending on your opening hand.
CREATURE:
Dragonlord Ojutai : A win-con on its own. Found in esper dragon lists as a primary win con, the same applies here. Dropping this on turn 5 and swinging every turn demands an answer. There are no counter spells so protecting her isn't easy, especially with Languish,
Stoke the Flames
and Exquisite Firecraft being popular. The card draw and damage she provides is so strong. If I had a third copy, I would probably run it in place of a Mantis Rider.
Mantis Rider : Value creature that comes out swinging on turn 3. With my current mana base it is sometimes difficult to play this on turn 3, but I am working on trading for some Battlefield Forge's and some
Shivan Reef
's. This creature also demands an answer. 3/3 body dodges
Wild Slash
and it is both a solid beater and blocker.
Seeker of the Way
: How do you instantly win against mono-red, thopters or jeskai burn? Play this guy and then drop a turn 5 Chandra's Ignition. This triggers prowess and gives it lifelink. Deals three damage to everything and gains you enough life to force concession. This deck is very slow compared to other aggro/burn decks which is popular in the meta.
Seeker of the Way
can provide some pretty profitable blocks by blocking a creature and then using Firey Impulse to kill 2 creatures and gain 3 life. Sometimes this is all you need to stay in the game.
Jeskai Elder
: He helps to fuel the graveyard and is a budget replacement for Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
. The 1/2 body isn't strong, but the prowess helps bluff combat tricks. When attacking with a prowess creature, there is a huge risk when blocking it. This means I can loot quite often with this guy.
SORCERY:
Chandra's Ignition : This card is here for value. Using this with seeker, as mentioned above wins games. My meta consists of mostly aggro decks with a couple of midrange decks. Using this with Mantis Rider or
Seeker of the Way
kills most things in aggro decks aside from Ensoul Artifact, and using it with Dragonlord Ojutai kills most things in abzan.
Howl of the Horde
: This card is the center piece of the whole deck. Attack with Mantis Rider and then post combat, triple cast any spell in the deck. This is how you win most games. Draw 7 effects have always being strong in magic, but Treasure Cruise turns into "draw 9" for 4 mana (delve 7). Tormenting Voice turns into "discard 1, draw 6" for 5 mana. Hordeling Outburst spawns 9 tokens, and Jeskai Charm domes your opponent for 12.
Hordeling Outburst : Provides some good chump blockers as well as it combos nicely with Jeskai Ascendancy and Jeskai Charm. It is unlikely to win the game from some 1/1 goblins but works well with
Howl of the Horde
.
Tormenting Voice/Magmatic Insight : Not much to say about this one. Fuel the graveyard for a Treasure Cruise and filter through your deck for more burn. Triple casting this late game is quite strong too.
Treasure Cruise/Dig Through Time : This card has proved its strength. You need gas in this deck. So much gas. But you also need land. Lots of land. Triple casting either a treasure cruise or dig through time will get you enough burn to win the game, easy. If you have a third Dig Through Time, feel free to add it, in place of the Treasure Cruise.
Swift Reckoning
: I've loved this card since it was spoiled. It seems so strong and in practice, it lives up to that. Kills anything that want's to be killed, so long as it doesn't have vigilance. Siege Rhino, Polukranos, World Eater, Dragonlord Ojutai. This card kills 'em all!
INSTANT:
Jeskai Charm : All of these modes are relevent. Putting a creature on top of its owners deck is strong and can sometimes result in a time walk. Bouncing a Tasigur, the Golden Fang after an abzan player delved their entire graveyard to do it, is hilarious. Deal 4 damage to an opponent will win the game when casted with
Howl of the Horde
. Can also finish them off if an ojuta goes unanswered. And giving 9 1/1 tokens a +1/+1 buff and lifelink will keep you in the game. This can also be used to gain 6 off a Dragonlord Ojutai.
Lightning Strike : This card needs to find a replacement at 2 mana. When battle for zendikar starts to be spoiled, I will be searching for either a reprint or an alternative. This card breaks my rules of post-rotation, but it is almost essential. Relying on 4 Jeskai Charm's to provide all of my burn is too unreliable. I was considering
Wild Slash
but it doesn't have the same impact. You may be only losing 1 damage for 1 less mana, but when you pull a Howl of the Horde
+
Lightning Strike
, you now lose 3 damage. Paying one more mana is worth the 3 damage when combo'd like this.
