Standard* FNM RBW (Mardu) Reanimator

This is a Mardu deck that uses powerful loot and reanimation spells to cheat extremely powerful creatures into play from the graveyard.

The deck's main plan is fairly linear. We want to fill the graveyard quickly with gearhulks and reanimate them with Refurbish, Rise from the Grave and Ever After to attack early for big damage. This deck uses cards like Cathartic Reunion and Collective Defiance to discard gearhulks and draw into those reanimator enablers. Standard consists of VERY LITTLE graveyard hate so it seems silly to not at least try to exploit this fact somehow. Reanimate is perfect since all the gearhulks have good ETB effects and can be targeted by a number of reanimation spells currently legal in standard.

Deck Design

I'd watched quite a few reanimator (Kaladesh) vids (notably MtgGoldfish and Frank Lepore) to review deck performance and gameplay strategy. I noticed that a lot of the lists use a considerable number of targeted removal spells. As a result the reanimation part of the deck seemed inconsistent in a lot of the games I watched. The decks seemed clogged and clunky. And understandably, most commentators seemed to shrug the archetype off.

I decided to cut back targeted removal in this list. I built it more focused on discard and graveyard recursion with increased numbers of both discard and recursion spells with 5-6 sweepers in the sideboard instead. It's all-in on reanimate plan game one and adjustments game two as needed. I do not use Prized Amalgam or Haunted Dead. Instead I focus on creature toolbox qualities of gearhulks to control the board and present game winning power at the same time. I also snuck Metalwork Colossus in for a decent graveyard target.

These changes I think consolidate the gameplan. As a result the deck gains greater overall consistency and resiliency. I have personally played through many opposing Emrakul, the Promised End with great success. There's nothing quite like eating an opponent's 13/13 with Noxious Gearhulk then subsequently stealing it from them with Rise from the Grave.

The overall individual games FNM record for the deck is 11-7-1 as of 12/30/2016.

Gameplay Tips

  • Mulligan aggressively. You're looking for a discard spell, land to play it, and at least one gearhulk. I think going to five is ok so long as you can pitch a gearhulk. You'll be drawing so many cards it doesn't matter. If you pitch a Combustible Gearhulk, so much the better since the opponent will likely let you draw three. Sometimes you'll get split on the good stuff in the opening 7. All reanimate and no hulks or vice versa. I think keeping a hand with reanimate and no gearhulks is worse than keeping a hand with gearhulks but no reanimate. We can simply draw into a discard spell and pitch gearhulks later. We don't really want to be in a situation to have to pitch a reanimate spell.

  • Discard aggressively. If you have one gearhulk and one refurbish and have the option to dump five cards and draw five cards with Collective Defiance , do it. Don't worry about dumping your hand. Draws are pretty consistent over all. Unless you dump five and draw five lands, you'll be a-okay. You'll likely hit another loot spell if you don't hit a refurbish or ever after.

  • They can't counter the discard clause of your loot spells. Cathartic Reunion lets you discard as a cost to playing the spell. So go ahead and play reunions into counters all day, if you're just trying to get hulks in the graveyard.

  • Do not panic through an Emrakul, the Promised End . A lot of what they can do on your turn may end up helping you. Look for lines of play that they didn't see. Getting a Noxious Gearhulk out is one of the most satisfying ways to deal with Emrakul. Work toward that plan. Proactively tuck a Nouxious in the graveyard as backup if you must.

  • Nahiri, the Harbinger isn't exactly your best friend in the deck but she is your very, very good friend. Float her on her plus 2 and minus 2 for as long as you can. You don't really need her ult. Her plus ability pitches gearhulks and draws into utility, fixing tough hands. Her minus two kills Stasis Snare and copters, etc. good to have her stick around for max value.

  • Employ aggressive board wipe. Again it doesn't really matter if our gearhulks get killed. We just get them back later. Killing two to clear the opponent's board is not a terrible plan unless the opponent has significant card advantage.

Updates Add

With a new set release right around the corner I always get the itch to brew. Make little tweaks to my existing deck lists with the new tech. Add a card here shave a card there. Before I know it I have a totally new deck! And not necessarily any better...

It can be downright hard to remember the original list. So with that in mind, I've decided to post a master deck list here. That way we can better track and compare changes.
