Sideboard


This is my take on a Modern Merfolk tribal deck. I especially like that there are few match-ups that are outright bad or unwinnable, and how smooth aggro and tempo elements work together in Merfolk.

As for how Merfolk decks work: Merfolk combines tribal synergies from cards as Silvergill Adept with cheap lords like Lord of Atlantis or Master of the Pearl Trident to pump up their team and give them evasion via Spreading Seas. The essential Aether Vial accelerates their plays and allows it to use lords, Cursecatcher, or Harbinger of the Tides as combat tricks, or to play around counterspells and removal. Add in some removal like Dismember, protection in Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, disruption like Vendilion Clique and haymaker like Master of Waves and you get a very adaptable deck that has been around for years (and will very unlikely get banned anytime).

I filled my remaining flex slots with Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, Kopala, Warden of Waves, Dismember, and Dispel. Other Merfolk decks run the full four Merrow Reejerey and Harbinger of the Tides and therefore have only four slots left.

Mainboard changes: Added Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, Kopala, Warden of Waves, 2 Dispel, 2 Dismember.

Removed 2 Vendilion Clique, 2 Vapor Snag, and 2 Spell Pierce.

Sideboard changes: Added 2 Vendilion Clique from the mainboard, one Relic of Progenitusfoil, one Dispel, one additional Negate.
