I HAVE ABANDONED THIS DECK
At the time of writing this (July 20th, 2021), tappedout tells me I have not altered this deck on here in 3 years. Which means it has been even longer since I actually played it as well. It's a weird thing for me to think about since this was once my go to deck to play Magic with. The first deck I actually made myself. But it's been a long time since I've known anyone who likes to play casual modern.
I've made a version of this deck for the pioneer format (which you can find on my account if interested) which I may alter from time to time, and I may end up making a commander deck based on the same idea, but this deck is going to a farm out west where it will peacefully live out the rest of it's days.
Below is the deck description that I wrote years ago and have not touched since.
Description
Corpsejack Menace
+
Kalonian Hydra
, get out hydras and other creatures that have +1/+1 counters that then have their +1/+1 counters doubled over and over again, then overwhelm opponents with really big creatures.
For those of you who don't get the name of the deck, it's what we call a type of coffee and how we order it here in Canada. "Large Double Double" means large coffee, with 2 creams and 2 teaspoons of sugar. This is often associated with the Tim Hortons franchise.
And for the last time, this deck is NOT called "Lots of Head".
CREATURES:
Kalonian Hydra
: Doubles the +1/+1 counters on ALL my creatures when it attacks, makes all my creatures really big and combos really well with
Corpsejack Menace
.
Corpsejack Menace
: Doubles the number of +1/+1 counters placed on my creatures when they are being placed by any effect or ability. Combos with all my creatures that enter with +1/+1 counters and have +1/+1 counters placed on them by their abilities. Also combos nicely with
Solidarity of Heroes
. It's ability DOES stack if I have more than one on the field, which is when things get really fun.
Primordial Hydra
: Doubles it's own +1/+1 counters at my upkeep. Good card by itself even without my other doubling effects on the field yet. Though it is even better when I have
Corpsejack Menace
on the field with it.
Managorger Hydra
: A decent hydra, gets a +1/+1 counter whenever ANYONE casts ANY type of spell. Does not gain as many counters as fast as my other hydras but it's still good, especially with
Corpsejack Menace
on the field and in multiplayer games.
Mistcutter Hydra
: Enters with counters, has Haste, protection from blue, and cannot be countered. It's just a good hydra which can go in fast and hit hard.
Hangarback Walker
: An cost creature that enters with counters, has an ability that puts counters on itself, and when it dies I get Thopters equal to the number of counters it had when it died. Which will be a lot after it's +1/+1 counters have been doubled several times. These will be replaced by
Walking Ballista
once it rotates out of standard and the price goes down.
Birds of Paradise
: Just in there for a little ramp.
NON-CREATURE SPELLS:
Solidarity of Heroes
: Doubles the number of +1/+1 counters on target creature for only 2 mana, and I can pay another 2 mana as many times as I have mana and additional targets for to double the +1/+1 counters on my other creatures as well. Combos with
Corpsejack Menace
very nicely.
Essence Harvest
: One of the ways to get rid of an opponent, especially if my hydras cannot attack for some reason. Also makes me gain a lot of life.
Vines of Vastwood
: Cover for my creatures to protect from spot removal.
Abrupt Decay
: basically the perfect early game removal, taking care of ANY non-land permanent under 3 CMC
Maelstrom Pulse
: Same as Abrupt Decay, except it hits things with higher CMC and is also great against tokens
NON-BASIC LAND:
Woodland Cemetery
: The BG check land, provides both black and green mana, and enters untapped if I have a
Forest
or
Swamp
already on the field. I will probably be adding the BG shock land,
Overgrown Tomb
, to this deck as well once I get my hands on some.
IDEAL PLAY:
Turn # 1: forest,
Birds of Paradise
Turn # 2: land,
Primordial Hydra
as a 1/1
Turn # 3: land,
Corpsejack Menace
, Primordial hydra is a 2/2 at this point
Turn # 4:
Primordial Hydra
doubles it's counters at upkeep, and
Corpsejack Menace
doubles the amount
Primordial Hydra
was about to put on, putting 4 more +1/+1 counters onto it making it a 6/6. Cast
Solidarity of Heroes
which doubles and combos with
Corpsejack Menace
, adding a total of 12 +1/+1 counters, making it an 18/18 which now has Trample due to its ability. Swing with
Primordial Hydra
then cast
Essence Harvest
. This is the fastest way this deck can win. I have been able to pull this off a few times, but usually it takes longer. Even when I do not get going the fastest the deck can go, I have still found it to be fairly reliable.
