Lazav Plays With Your Mind (UPDATED 100% FOIL)

Hi all! Thanks for having a look at this, my MTG love child! This is hands down my most favored deck due to color combination and playstyle. It is the deck that I have put the most blood, sweat, and tears (aka money) into to achieve and currently sits as the only deck in my arsenal to be 100% foiled.

I'd like to discuss the ins and outs of this deck here so that most, if not all of the cards listed have themselves justified. I'm always happy to receive suggestions, however please remember that this deck is to be 100% foiled while functioning as best as possible (so no Helm of Obedience suggestions, please [=)

To begin, I'll be discussing cards that most often crop up during the early portion of the game. Keeping in mind that most typically, the Paris Mulligan rule is used to find enough land to handily cast Lazav on turns 3-4.

There are a lot of important cards in the early game that work towards disrupting players quickly in order to gain the time to build into whatever game plan the deck happens to be firing on from the beginning. It isn't common that I keep a winning combo piece in my hand unless It's something that costs a small amount or functions handily on its own. Mindcrank as an example. The following list is of cards that make noteworthy plays at the beginning of the game.

Altar of the Brood - Serves as one of the most handy disruption engines. I ALWAYS keep this card in the opener. Even in decks that don't play mill as the overall theme, the disruption this card offers is just too good to ignore. Chromatic Lantern - One of the finest mana fixers in the format. This card typically isn't too effective in dual colored decks, especially ones with heavy mana fixing, but I like to make sure that Lazav is as castable as possible for the fact that he's four colored mana to cast.

Jace Beleren - Probably the most political of the Jaces as he allows everyone to draw cards while he builds up. And more often than not, he nets quite a few draws before he draws attention or gets forgotten and bombs. He just doesn't draw as much threat as a would-be Hero's Downfall could handle later, making him rather effective to play sooner rather than later.

Mesmeric Orb - I was rather skeptical about this card for quite some time for the fact that it mills myself as well. However, the fact that it adds additional disruption and just gets nastier to have with Lazav on board.Typically if people don't handle it as soon as it hits, it does a LOT of damage.

Memory Erosion - Obviously having an effect that just naturally mills people for playing the game is nice. That any of these effects that punish people for playing the game can combo with the core Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank combo to prevent me from having to spend the extra mana to kill people makes each and every one them viable. I'm going to make a quick note of the enchantment package here, as they are all cards that thrive best the earlier in the game they drop. Bloodchief Ascension serves as a combo piece in conjunction with the aforemention guildmage combo. And Frozen AEther is a card that solely serves to annoy and disrupt my opponents' and most typically draw removal away from other combo pieces.

Mindshrieker - An early game flier that get's in for SO much damage in conjunction with the small equipment package. He's pretty flexible at just about any point in the game. So here he is.Sensei's Divining Top - Auto-include. ALWAYS.

Thassa, God of the Sea - An indestructible enchantment that gives incremental card advantage for 3 mana is fine. One that can grant evasion AND turn into a dude, simply marvelous. Synergizes well with Phenax.

Sword of Body and Mind - Easily an auto include equipment for every mill deck.

Swiftfoot Boots - A commander staple. While Lazav is already hexproof, it does grant it to other creatures who might want to stick on the board longer without hexproof.

Trepanation Blade - The second of two equipment I've deemed worth of putting onto Mindshrieker. Works well as a Balustrade Spy-esque effect that's repeatable. Doesn't typically hit huge but it can.

Obvious includes here in Dimir Cluestone and Dimir Signet. A quick note as to why I don't run Sol Ring as that seems to be a common question. The fact that Lazav takes four colored mana to cast means that Sol Ring does nothing to ramp into him in the early game unless it's being used to cast a mana rock. While I understand that it is guaranteeably among the strongest mana rocks in the format, I don't actually believe that it is an auto include for a deck like this one.

WOOHOO! It's finally done! As of about a week ago from today, This deck has achieved 100% foiling! Thanks to everyone who traded with me to help make it possible! I plan on updating regularly when cuts are made. Please help to make this deck run as efficiently as possible, but remember, suggested cards MUST be available in foil!
