With this deck we are trying to pitch cards into the graveyard and reanimate them at a cheaper cost. The deck very much resembles Sultai Reanimator from before rotation; we lost a few big creatures, but honestly the deck doesn't seem much different. Probably doesn't see play, because Scarab God and GPG are usually better, especially with Vraska's Contempt hitting Liliana even when Scarab and Hazoret are the real targets in standard.

Ways to reanimate (5 in deck)

  1. Liliana, Death's Majesty
  2. Can bring back anything back on turn 5. Also fills yard and can make zombies to sacrifice to Razaketh or chump with. Maybe a 4 of.
  3. The Scarab God
  4. Best card in the deck. I ignore doing anything else if I'm stabilized to play it. Recurs on turn 6 at earliest.
  5. Demon of Dark Schemes
  6. Last resort, but is a cheap reanimator.
  7. Boneyard Parley
  8. Leads to a win 95% of the time, but since I cut a lot of big creatures, it isn't worth it at 7 mana.

Ways to pitch cards (11)

  1. Champion of Wits
  2. One of the best cards in the deck. Obvious card filtering, but also late game wincon with card advantage. Doesn't need another card to bring it back.
  3. Chart a Course
  4. Can be used precombat or postcombat for different effects. Post board sometimes we are not as focused on reanimation and we swing early against control.
  5. Search for Azcanta  
  6. Consistent GY filling, even when opponent has GY hate. Filtering and late game finds wincons.

Targets to reanimate (9)

  1. The Scarab God
  2. Not always the best target honestly, but if stabilized it is.
  3. Noxious Gearhulk
  4. At 6 mana, can often be hardcast; kills most creatures and stabilizes us. Menace can be relevant.
  5. Razaketh, the Foulblooded
  6. Just a bonkers card if in a board stall or can attack. Sac Lili zombies or Champion of Wits and find your removal; Noxious, Demon, Push with Revolt, etc.
  7. Hostage Taker
  8. Great late game to grab and immediately cast a creature as a 3 for 1.
  9. Gonti, Lord of Luxury
  10. Easily castable and can help take their best cards, find cheap removal, and chump blocks anything; late game can steal their Approach or any other wincon.
  11. Torrential Gearhulk
  12. Testing Torrential right now over something else big or hostage taker. Usually hostage and torrential both need at least 6 mana to feel safe, but both Gearhulks can usually just do it more efficiently and are better to bring back. Having the threat of counterspells after sideboard and a variety of kill spells presideboard makes Torrential a good target to reanimate, especially with Scarab God.
  13. Demon of Dark Schemes
  14. Crushes aggro, chump blockers, reanimates, a rare flyer in our deck and only kills Champion in our 75.

Ways to push us to late game (12)

  1. Fatal Push
  2. Obvious inclusion. We have some lands+Razaketh to turn on revolt.
  3. Hour of Glory
  4. Budget Vraska's Contempt. Best way to get rid of Hazoret, Scarab, or Rhonas which I see a lot.
  5. Gifted Aetherborn
  6. Tried playing the deck with 2 and always sided in 2 more. Can beat up on control decks, can gain life against aggro if they don't have a 3 powered block set up for it early, and can block most creatures. Also eats removal so Hostage Taker can come down.
  7. Three flex slots
  8. Bontu's Last Reckoning is good in our deck since we go over the top. Even playing it and then casting Gifted or Champion is great giving us a blocker for the next turn. Only need to watch out for Hostage Taker. Testing Yahenni's Expertise in this spot since we have Noxious and deathtouch to kill big stuff anyway. Doomfall is also in testing. This is our only control disruption and is another answer to creatures early and late if we don't let them get wide. If they do, the game is probably over anyway. Essence Scatter and Essence Extraction are other possibilities for extending the game and countering their biggest play.

Updates Add

1-1 Mono White Monument Brew. He had an aggressive game 1, where he ended up playing out some indestructible horses and an Angel of Invention to finish it off. In game 2, we both gained so much life that the game lasted forever. We went to turns and on turn 3 he was at thirty. I smashed in for 15 and then had lethal so he conceded. He also had 2 Ixalans Bindings and 2 Gideon's Interventions. I don't have counterspells, but eventually overcame having a bunch of my deck shut down.

2-0 Mardu Vehicles. Opponent played slow and we ended in turns again, but I answered his threats early and ended up with a massive board state in both games.

2-1 B/W Vampires. Game 1 he crushed me with aggression and Sanctum Seeker. Game 2 he sided out Fatal Push and I went up from 2 to 4 Gifted Aetherborn and got him fairly easily with life gain and eventually going over the top of him. In game 3 he used Lost Legacy on Demon of Dark Schemes, which is only a 1 of and later I couldnt think of a reason to keep back my Verdant Sun's Avatar on a triple attack, but he had Settle the Wreckage. I still won easily since we had gotten to the late game.

2-1 Naya Planeswalker Dinos. Player was 3-0 and crushing most people. Game 1 he beat me down and finished me with a 5/5 from Nissa, Vital Force after I swept the board. Game 2 I won by using Hostage Taker and going wide around his dinosaurs after he kept a low land hand. In game 3, he played 2 Drover of the Mighty after I used Harsh Scrutiny to take his only other creature and basically he did nothing the whole game and waited for me to draw threats.

Top 4 with a record of 3-0-1.

2-0 Beat the Mono White Monument player again where I had answers for his threats and in game 2 he kept a 6 card 1 land hand and didnt draw a land for multiple turns. I kept a greedy 1 land 7 card opener where I had a Harsh Scrutiny, a tap land, and 3 plays when I drew my second land and one was a way to draw into land. Then a Champion of Wits after that. Easily won by hitting my land drops.

2-0 Against Naya Planeswalker Dinos again. He didn't have any answers for my early threats and I exiled his Enrage dinos. In game 2 I got Harsh Scrutiny again in my opening hand, which is insanely good to have.

Took out 1 Treasure Map and 1 Gonti for the other 2 Gifted Aetherborn from the sideboard.

I need to get Search for Azcanta for Treasure Map if I can and Vraska's Contempt for Hour of Glory. Search is amazing for this deck and can take the place of our Strategic Planning as well.

Standard showdown went well going 6-2 in games. 2-1 Unrefined Merfolk list. Game 1 I had plenty of removal and got in late game value. Game 2 he got 3-4 creatures out and used countered both Bontu's Last Reckonings. And then in game 3, Bontu's+Yahenni annihilated him.

2-0 Temur Energy. The player is fairly new and missed a few interactions. He also kept some weaker hands, which is easy to do when you are new. So the games went very slow, but I had a Scarab God in game 1 for a few turns until he used Harnessed Lightning+Magma Spray on it. Then in game 2 I got my Liliana online and to stick after killing his 2 Servants and shutting off his blue mana for the Negate in hand.

2-1 Naya Dinosaurs. Game 1 I gained a bunch of life and stalled the board out with a Scarab God+Verdant Suns Avatar. Huge board state on both side, but obviously favored me. In game 2 he got out 2 quick Rampaging Ferocidons and I had 1 bad attack that may have cost me the game. But I may have lost anyway. I would have been at 4 and able to cast Noxious with only 1 Rampaging left alive, but instead I was at 1 life because I swung early to gain life and couldn't. So I couldn't double block either. Then in game 3 he was stuck on 3 lands and I killed his early creatures.

Bought 3 Search for Azcantas with the credit I won. Big improvement and helps toss stuff in graveyard repeatedly.
