This is a theorycraft for an idea I had for Dungeons and Dragons, for randomly generating treasure in a more interesting way than just handing out gold or rolling on a table. Each card represents some different kind of treasure. To use the deck, simply shuffle it and start flipping over cards until you get a pile that you think approximates the amount of value you want to give out. Most of the custom categories should be fairly self explanatory, but here's a brief summary:
Gear represents equipment. I put in a couple of different types of gear; weapons, armor, helmets, gloves, boots, etc. For each type of equipment, I tried to include two of each kind of card (e.g., Short Sword vs Blade of Selves.) The low rarity card would represent a nonmagical or common magic item, the higher rarity card would represent a rarer or higher value item.
Random treasure represents various kinds of non-magical valuable items, to add some variety to loot besides just handing out coinage. Statues, valuable jewelry, silverware, artwork, gemstones, things of that type.
Wands and Potions are self explanatory. If you're wondering why I didn't just add Chaos Wand five times, I decided to add a variety of wands to possibly help inspire me as to what the wand might be when it's drawn from the deck. Same for potions.
Misc magic gear is where I threw any item I could think of that seemed like it could be some sort of magical item to be handed out, but didn't seem like it'd be a piece of equipment for a specific slot.
Coins could be any sort of filler card to represent generic coinage to be handed out. If you wanted to get fancier or a bit more specific, you could use multiple cards to represent different amounts (e.g. 1 gold, 10 gold, 50 gold, etc) or denomination (e.g. gold, silver, copper) of coins. Treasure tokens would be really ideal for these. The number here was chosen totally arbitrarily; just a big number so that coins outnumbered other items.
Disclaimer: I haven't play tested this at all for balance, and I'm sure that each of these categories could be expanded on significantly with more time; this is just something I threw together as a proof of concept. But I really enjoy the idea, and I feel it's a fun way to spice up handing out loot for players. And it's easily customizable for each DM's own taste; simply adjust the amount of each kind of item and add or subtract duplicate cards as necessary for the right balance of loot.
