Many Heads Are Better Than One (XXX Version)

Commander / EDH BUG (Sultai) Hydra

Koneman

Intro:

This is one of my favorite decks. The point is to get out giant hydras whilst screwing over your opponents, with some other fun stuff going on. But mostly big a$$ hydras (B.A.H.)!

Mana:

In order to get your BAHs going you need mana to throw into your X cost spells. The deck is rocking 34 lands including Gaea's Cradle, which is awesome when you've got your hydras rolling. The deck has 6 mana rocks, which includes the classics, (Example: Sol Ring & Mana Crypt) and then one rock specific to X cost spells, Elementalist's Palette. Lastly, the deck has some fun land ramp which contains both cards to play more land (Example: Exploration & Dryad of the Ilysian Grove) & cards to search your deck for lands (Example: Animist's Awakening & Kodama of the West Tree). The ultimate mana combo in this deck, which results in unlimited mana of all colors is Pemmin's Aura + Zaxara, the Exemplary . Its great when your commander is part of the inf. mana combo isn't it?!

Draw:

The draw/search in this deck is less than I normally have in a deck with blue and black in it, but it seems to work out most of the time. There are 5 draw cards, 3 of which have X in the mana cost and will work well with the commander if you poor all your mana into them. Special shoutout to Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, who allows you to draw when a creature with the highest power comes onto the field which should be happening often cause your hydras should only increase in power as your mana increases. She also has a great mana ability to help with this process which gives X mana based on your highest powered creature, which is insane. In addition to these draw cards, you have 4 classic tutors in the deck, 2 of which can search for any card and 2 or which search for any creature. Fun stuff.

Counters:

No, I don't mean counter spells (Those are the next section), I mean +1/+1 counters. The whole deck is about +1/+1 counters, considering that the whole idea is using your X cost spells to create hydras with X +1/+1 counters. In order to maximize the hydras strength you have the previously mentioned land/mana ramping as well as a few cool cards specific to +1/+1 counters. This deck contains 5 cards that, through various different wordings, essentially double the counters you put on cards whenever you put them on. So cast a X cost card for X mana and your resulting hydra will have 2X +1/+1 counters. The math is mathing. Kalonian Hydra is the one exception to this, as it only doubles counters when it attacks. Strionic Resonator is a fun card for this deck, as it can copy any triggered ability, including your commanders hydra creating one or a doubling +1/+1 counters one, or whatever works for you in a given situation. The Ozolith is so fun in this deck. It saves the counters of your dead permanents and allows you to place them on other things once per turn. If you have a doubling card out with The Ozolith, you'll have way to many counters in no time. What to do with all these extra counters though besides make BAHs? Simic Ascendancy is your answer. If you can get this card out and keep it out for a turn, it's pretty easy to get that W. A fun way to go about it is if you get it out without enough counters so your opponent won't focus it, and then at the end of your opponents turn cast an X cost instant, create a hydra with X +1/+1 counters and then add X counters to Simic Ascendancy for the W when your turn starts.

Control:

This section includes all cards that essentially control the board state, of which this deck has a lot. Most of these cards are X cost cards that will work to also get your BAHs out, granted Zaxara, the Exemplary is on the field. These cards range from counter spells (Examples Condescend & Counterspell), to target creature has bad things happen (Examples Battle at the Bridge & Blue Sun's Twilight), to my favorites, cards that hurt everybody except you (Examples Exsanguinate & Villainous Wealth). That last category of cards is a game winner if you have inf. or even just a large amount of mana. Either way, fun stuff!
