Sideboard

Maybeboard

Inspired by the forgotten predecessor to Soulfire Grand Master, Coldsnap's Tamanoa led me on a build-around chase within the Naya color identity of Marath, Will of the Wild. The two main, and probably "durdly", pieces that combo with Tamanoa while paired with any of the pain lands are Ajani's Pridemate and Searing Meditation. Throughout the brewing process Tamanoa has gone from being a lynch pin for the deck to function to more of a midrange build that uses Tamanoa as added benefit.

The maybeboard is filled with enchantments that deal out symmetrical damage but unless Tamanoa is in play they become either a gamble or a dead card in hand. That said, I feel she can be a winning midrange piece if used correctly. I will continue to tweak this deck as Tamanoa has become a pet card of mine (for better or worse).

All that aside, with Hardened Scales on the field, Marath effectively becomes an instant-speed planeswalker. Being able to target itself with its first ability, careful activations can lead to taking over the board while laying down supporting pieces, namely Basilisk Collar. This, in conjunction with the ecosystem of lifegain pieces, should lead to success more often than not when reaching mid-to-late game.

Recently at our local store tournament, with a small turnout, I won two out of three matches. The number one problem matchup so far has been mono-red burn/land destruction. Can't wait to put in some more games and report back with any updates!
