Mardu Midrange (Feat. Purphoros) Top 4 GPT!

Standard Competitive RBW (Mardu) Tokens

Pseudolife

Sideboard

So far, I've won a lot of matches at FNM with a different version of this deck. It ran 4 copies of Bloodsoaked Champion... as well as mainboarded Stormbreath Dragons but the deck felt a little confused.

Someone commented after I beat him, that Purphoros was easily the strongest card in my deck, because it was what beat him both times. (BTW he won game one, and was Playing Abzan Midrange.) I too felt this was the case and even though cards like Bloodsoaked Champion have the potential to pop back from the graveyard... It seemed like it wasn't really helping. So with this version I've streamlined it to focus on taking out early threats with spells, (Perhaps pinging the player as well) and then making the kill with Purphoros or the Butcher of the Horde.

Problems I forsee:Since I'll be winning mid-late game I think I'll have problems with Control. While they have card-draw and removal... I'll be top-decking while they have 4+ cards in hand. I'll have to really watch how I use my cards. Maybe a card like Athereos, god of the passage turn 3 could make the difference?

I believe I have answers to all the other decks in the format right now, but it feels too spell-heavy now! What do you think?

Yay, I made it to the top 4 table and only lost versus the #1 player because I knee-jerk passed turn when I meant to thoughtsieze away his Hornet Queen. (Which was his only card in hand.) I would have proceeded to butcher him for the win... but well... hornet queen eats fliers for breakfast.

It's clear to me that End Hostilities is in most Mardu sideboards for a very good reason. So I will be adding two of those for sure! Versus Abzan those will come in everytime!

Also... I'm not sure, but I think the Lightning bolts are going to get swapped for Magma Jets. Anyone have an opinion on that?

Part of me wants to replace purphoros for Seeker of the Way but then this would just be another Mardu midrange deck that I needn't even post! Purphoros makes it interesting.

Also I ran a 1-of Underworld Cereberus today... and he just WRECKED this one Abzan deck I was playing since it negates Whip of Erebos. He was like... "WTF you run that mainboard??! OMGWTFSUX!?!?!"

So that was cool. Abzan is definately a tough matchup when I'm not running 3 Strombreaths like I used to... so that's something to consider. Anyway please vote and let me know what you think!
