Face-Melting With Mogis has very few creatures to keep your devotion down while maintaining Mogis as an indestructible enchantment that pings each opponent for 2 damage each turn until you put Furnace of Rath down to double the effect. In a multi-player format, you will find that the lack of dudes on your battlefield isn't such a bad thing as most players won't see you as an immediate threat. If they do, you have plenty of spot removal and board wipes (which will barely affect you) to answer back.

What makes THIS version of different from other punisher decks is the mitigation of self-inflicted damage. I've always said that it only takes one life total to win any game of MTG, but why sacrifice your life or board-state if you don't have to?

Why Mogis, God of Slaughter? He's underrated by most EDH players. Add him to a list like this one and you've got a nice compliment to your other punishing effects. His casting cost isn't bad at all, and most people will think you're going to play an aggro or control deck until a few turns into the game. Mogis is also hard to remove as a God/Enchantment and a decent threat as a 7/5 creature as well. Additionally, this deck doesn't require Mogis to be effective, so if he does get hated on, you can still play with your feet up on the table.

Key points and combos:

  • Remember that when Mogis, God of Slaughter hits opponents for his 2 damage ability, that this damage does not count toward commander damage, only combat damage.

  • For those who wish to build or modify this deck, be sure to keep as much spot removal as possible. This is a challenge, especially with Black, but not impossible.

  • When modifying this deck keep Mogis' devotion in mind. While losing him as a God/Enchantment isn't a game-breaker, he will fall off the table quickly if you give your opponents a chance.

  • There are no infinite combos that I have found yet.

  • Never play Maralen of the Mornsong unless you can get Stranglehold in play first! Giving your opponents just one turn to tutor at your expense may cost you the game.

  • Maralen of the Mornsong + Stranglehold . This two-card combo prevents your opponents from drawing cards or tutoring and then drains 3 life on every turn. While you will take 3 life for this combo as well, you can enjoy ramping effects while your opponents remain in library lock-down. Bonus points if you can get Exquisite Blood on the board with this combo.

  • When Spreading Plague is in play, remember your politics! This card is especially powerful against multi-color opponents.

  • Stuffy Doll is key. Feel free to invite your political allies to get a free shot at your biggest threat on the board.

  • Bloodchief Ascension + Mogis, God of Slaughter will take off QUICKLY! Usually in one or two turns.

  • Bloodchief Ascension + Mindcrank

  • Pariah's Shield + Stuffy Doll
